Hi Currently have a policy with you. I am considering buying another car and might need to make my wife a regular driver on my existing car. She is Italian and does not have a South African identity document, can I make her a regular driver? If so, how do I go about it?
The fact that she does not have a SA Id number is not a problem. Out agents will use her passport number on our system. What she does need is a valid driver’s licence. The excerpt below is out of our policy wording and deals with valid driver’s licences.
International licence/permit
MiWay only accepts regular drivers with a full and valid driver’s licence. MiWay will also accept licences obtained in foreign countries provided that the driver is driving legally in South Africa. The option “International Licence/Permit” must be selected on the system and the original date of obtaining the underlying licence must be captured to obtain the correct premium. It should be made very clear to the client that the onus rests upon him/her to ensure that he/she is driving legally in South Africa. If the client is not driving legally in SA his/her claims will not be entertained. Please note that in some countries it is possible to obtain a driver’s licence before the age of 18. If the client is younger than 18, even if they have an international drivers licence, they will not be permitted to drive in South Africa. A person must be 18 years of age or older to be able to drive legally in South Africa. It is always easier for claims to validate a claim if the person does have an international permit but a claim will not be rejected if the person does not a permit but is driving legally in SA.
