How Motor Cars Have Affected our Travel Habits

Published on: 11 June 2015

For many years, people have relied on motor cars to get them to where they need to be. The convenience and simplicity of this travel solution has, in turn, completely transformed our travel habits – but, suprisingingly, not necessarily for the better.

When one has access to a motor car, one often begins to take it for granted and use it whenever any sort of travel is required, whether for long road trips to an exciting holiday destination or for a quick drive to the shops. As a result, many car owners have become overly-reliant on their vehicles and, in many cases, incredibly lazy.

Is Laziness the Reason Why Car Costs Are So High?

The car is indeed a wonderful travel solution that fits in perfectly with our transport needs, and it is a solution that many of us cannot do without. For those of us who live and work in two different areas, the car is not only a luxury, but an essential. This is especially true when one looks at the lack of reliable public transport options that are available in South Africa.

However, the fact of the matter is that motor cars (as well as other motor vehicles such as motorcycles) - and the process of driving them day in and out - make a huge dent in our bank accounts at the same time. Think about the amount of money that we pay for fuel and car insurance  every month – never mind general vehicle maintenance and services. It’s more than just a pretty penny, isn’t it? Now ask yourself, ‘why am I driving to the store that is just up the road from my home when I could very easily just walk there?’ Using our cars unnecessarily is one of our worst travel habits in South Africa, and we are – literally – paying the price as a result.

The question is - what can we actually do to break this habit? The answer is quite simple, really. If ever you need to be somewhere that is within walking distance, leave your car keys at home and take a stroll. Not only will it be a great way in which to save money, but it will also be good for your health - a little bit of fresh air and exercise can do wonders for your wellbeing.

If, however, walking just isn’t your thing, why not consider purchasing a bicycle instead? It is a slightly faster alternative to making your way to your destination on foot, yet it is still a great tool for exercise. Whichever option you choose, you will be doing yourself, your car, and your bank account a massive favour!

Obviously, walking or riding a bike is not always an option, which is why it is still important for you to look after your motor car and ensure that it is covered for all possible eventualities. Contact MiWay today  for information and advice on landing the most affordable insurance possible.
