Safety Tips for Festive Season Shopping

Published on: 20 November 2014

With the shops getting busier towards the end of November and early December, the festive season means one thing for shoppers – mayhem!  Here are some tips to share and remember that will hopefully protect you and your belongings during this frantic time.

#1: While shopping

  • Always ensure that your handbag is closed and that the clip or zip is on the side touching your body
  • Never leave your cellphone on a chair or the desk where you pay for your goods. Your cellphone should  either be in your pocket or in your handbag
  • Do not let people distract you while you are at the till point
  • Do not leave your trolley with all your goods unattended. Keep it close to you and ensure someone is watching it for you if you go into the change rooms
  • Never leave your handbag, wallet or cellphone in the trolley while shopping
  • Agree on a meeting point with your kids in case you get separated, and make sure that they know what to do if they lose you.

#2: Shopping bags

  • Never leave packages and shopping bags visible on your car seat, rather lock them in your boot
  • Buy the most expensive items later in the day and do not leave them in the car when you continue shopping
  • When you take purchases to your car and want to continue shopping, park your car in another spot so that prowlers may think that you have left for the day
  • Don’t get loaded down with too many bags. Try to keep one hand free.

#3: Personal safety at the parking lot

  • Never park next to vans and cars with tinted windows.
  • After you have parked, lock all doors, close all windows and check again before you walk away
  • Before leaving the pay station, make sure that you have your car’s keys in your hand. This will ensure that you are not distracted when you get to your car. Remember to lock your doors immediately once inside
  • Do not approach your car if you see suspicious people lurking around
  • If possible, ask a car guard or security guard to accompany you to your car if you have a trolley loaded with shopping bags and gifts

#4: Be vigilant

Make sure that you are aware of your surroundings and stay alert at all times, especially in busy shops and crowed streets where pickpockets and thieves may be operating.

#5: Go online

Alternatively, you can skip the queues and mayhem and shop online. Your favourite shop may have an e-commerce website – if they do find the products you want and buy it without getting out of your pyjamas. It’s also convenient because you don’t need to wait for them to open!

As a client of MiWay, you can update your policy online - whenever you like. You’ll skip the call centre queue and, during office hours, can chat to a consultant if you need to. It’s really easy to add new items to your policy – and you can even claim online! If you haven’t already, register for MiXpress, MiWay’s self-service portal here

Happy Holidays!
