Watch Out for Car Theft Scams

Published on: 12 March 2015

We are all aware of the dangers of hijacking, but did you know that thieves nowadays are actually a lot smarter and more strategic when it comes to stealing your car? As a result, car insurance is a must for every driver on the roads of South Africa.

The Different Types of Car Theft Scams

  • There’s something wrong with your tyre: If you are driving along and a pedestrian points to your tyre or  your bumper, claiming there’s something wrong, never get out of the car!  Immediately check that all of your doors are locked, because there is often someone waiting to enter your car from the back door the moment you pull over it. To stay safe, drive to your nearest petrol station and check the exterior of your car there.
  • The good Samaritan: If you ever see someone lying in the road, do not stop your car to assist them. Instead, drive somewhere safe and call an ambulance. There are new scams these days where someone pretends to be hurt in the middle of the road with the aim to get you to exit your vehicle.  As soon as you do this a number of other men jump out of the bushes, attack you and steal your car. In this case, you definitely want to avoid being the ‘good Samaritan’. It just isn’t worth the risk.
  • Remote jamming: Criminals are now able to jam the signal from your car remote using a gate remote that operates at the same frequency, preventing the locking mechanism from working when it is activated. As a result, it is always wise to manually check that your car has been locked before leaving the vicinity.

Remember that unless there happens to be security footage of the area, it is unlikely that you will be able to claim from your vehicle insurance provider if you fall victim to this scam due to the fact that there will be no evidence of forced entry.

It is also important to remember that although thieves use remote jamming as a way in which to gain access to valuables that you keep in your car, it is also a technique that can be used to steal the vehicle itself.
  • Driveway hijacking: Regardless of whether or not you live in a safe, boomed-off area, it is never wise to enter your driveway before the gate has opened completely. Often, criminals are hiding behind trees or in bushes waiting for you to do exactly that so that they can steal your car, or worse – enter your home. It is, therefore, important to have an electric gate installed so that you do not need to exit your vehicle at any time in order to open it.

Even if you remain alert at all times, it is still possible to fall victim to car theft, which is why it is essential that you sort out your car insurance as soon as you buy a car and as soon as you begin driving on the roads.
