Insurance on the go: Keeping your valuables safe this summer

With summer days to be enjoyed and travel restrictions now a thing of the past, most of us are once again on the move to our favourite holiday destinations. But while this increased mobility is undoubtedly a breath of fresh air, the resulting comings and goings do also mean that our homes and valuables are likely to be left more vulnerable.

Whether you're taking your valuables along for the ride this summer or leaving them unattended at home, here are some important tips to bear in mind to avoid any unforeseen financial setbacks upon your return:

  • Specify your valuables

Depending on your insurance cover, the majority of your possessions should be covered by your general household or car insurance. However, should more expensive items like TVs, laptops, cellphones and pieces of jewelry exceed a certain value threshold, they will need to be specified in your insurance policy. High value items - particularly those like laptops, handbags and electronics which are more likely to be carried with you - should be specified with a correlating value, to reduce any potential setbacks when filing a claim.

  • Do your sums

When it comes to these high-value items, it's also important to ensure that they're covered in line with their current replacement value, rather than for the amount you initially paid. By reviewing and amending your insurance cover annually, taking into account inflation and fluctuations in the exchange rate, you'll be able to rest easy knowing you won't be out of pocket in the event of theft.

  • Exercise caution

Whether you're on the go, on holiday or staying home, it's vital that you exercise caution at all times, no matter how comprehensive your insurance cover is. Avoid leaving items exposed to prying eyes, as you’re unlikely to be covered in the event of negligence or if forced entry cannot be proved. Avoid leaving valuables in your car or in plain sight in your home, and ensure your vehicle and property are locked at all times.

Remember that MiWay extends your cover beyond the borders of South Africa, so if you're finally heading abroad on that much anticipated trip, make sure that you understand the conditions of your insurance policy prior to departure.

Wherever your holiday takes you this year, make sure it's a memorable one for all the right reasons by ensuring you're appropriately covered for any eventuality.
