Simple Strategies For Letting Go of Clutter

With the dawning of a new year, it is always useful to get rid of unwanted clutter – however, this is an act which can be stressful for some! Decluttering can cause anxiety because some people may be emotional hoarders, while others lack a basic strategy to get rid of clutter and items that they either no longer want, need or use. However, it has been found that letting go of clutter is known to have a positive effect on your emotional and mental state of being, and it also means a lot less stuff to clean regularly!

There are more than a few ways to get rid of clutter. While some clutter should go straight in the dustbin, other items may be a bit more lucrative and can be sold to make some extra cash.

Sort Through The Clutter

Take some time to sort through your clutter. Divide them into piles and decide from there which of the items should be discarded, and which of it can be sold or given to charity. This way, you are not only getting rid of clutter, but you are also being mindful of how you do it.

Create A Mental Inventory of Unwanted Stuff and Toss It Out

The trick here is to throw away things that you know have no value and no use. Holding onto unnecessary items for years only adds to your anxiety and is not beneficial in creating that decluttered space you’ve been dreaming of.

The Ten-Second Rule

The idea behind the ten-second rule is to hold items for ten seconds and make a conscious decision on whether or not the item brings joy or is of sentimental value to you. If the answer to both these questions is no, then it’s probably best to donate or discard the item.

Decide to Declutter and Mean It

The exercise in decluttering would be futile if, at the end of it, you still have most of what you started with. Make a conscious decision to declutter your home and have a friend or family member do an accountability check-in with you to make sure that you stay on track and get rid of unwanted items.

Decluttering your home or office space is no easy task. The decision to declutter the places and spaces that you occupy is a personal one and should be approached with care and consideration. Think about decluttering like a comprehensive insurance plan which suits your lifestyle and your budget; while such an insurance policy provides you with financial security in light of an unforeseen circumstance, decluttering provides you with peace of mind and clarity in your daily surroundings and promotes a sense of well-being.

Do yourself a favour and set the tone for 2021 by decluttering your home, office or garage in preparation for the new year. Another great way to prepare for the year ahead is to compare online insurance quotes – why not start with MiWay?
