Be aware - stay alive!

Being aware of your surroundings means that you will always be more prepared to tackle a situation, should an uncomfortable – or even dangerous – one arise.

Here are some reminders of how to stay aware:

  • Stay on the lookout for suspicious activities around you.
  • Keep your car locked at all times.
  • Stash all your valuables in the boot or cubbyhole of your car – otherwise you’re essentially displaying them to potential criminals. Even a jacket left on your passenger seat poses a temptation.
  • While driving, always leave enough space between your car and the car in front of you to allow you to a swerve or make a quick exit if needs be.
  • When approaching your car, put away your phone! Being on your phone shows you are distracted and unaware of your surroundings and therefore makes you a target.
  • At night time, park in well-lit areas and make sure your keys are either in your hand or easy to access.
  • Be cautious and trust your gut - should you suspect anything dodgy, turn back and find a safer spot.
  • Do you have a flat tyre? If possible, slowly and carefully drive to the nearest petrol station where you will be in a safer spot to change your tyre – or get help. If it’s not possible, stay in your car, roll up your windows, lock your doors and phone MiHelp, MiWay’s emergency roadside assistance team, who will be able to provide you with help.
