What is the difference between limited and comprehensive car insurance?

Comprehensive car insurance provides the widest cover – covering your car for theft and hijacking, damages from an accident, fire or explosion and natural disasters like hail and floods, as well as covering damages to your car’s glass and liability to other parties if you’re in an accident.Limited car insurance is where the policy holder chooses to limit what they’re covered (ie. not to have cover for all of the above).

How do I determine the value of my household contents?

The best and easiest way is to create an inventory of all of your household contents with the replacement value of the item. The total replacement value of this entire list is the insurable value.

What happens in the event of a claim if I undervalue my household contents?

You would carry a part of the risk in proportion to the amount that you undervalued your household items. In other words, if the actual value of your household contents is R200 000 and you have cover for R100 000 (50% of the value), MiWay will cover 50% of your loss.

Does MiWay insure older vehicles?

Yes, we do. If the vehicle does not exist in our system we’ll agree on a value of the vehicle with you, the policy holder, insure your vehicle for that value.

Why do I need to take my vehicle for inspection?

A thorough inspection up front prevents you from having problems in the unfortunate event of having to claim. By giving your vehicle a thorough inspection – determining whether there’s any existing damage to the vehicle, confirming if the immobiliser is adequate and in good working order and obtaining the details of any non-standard accessories and sound equipment, we make sure that we have all the info we need to cover your car properly.

What’s the difference between ‘retail’ and ‘market’ value?

‘Retail value’ is the higher of the two, it’s the average price a dealer would sell the vehicle for – taking into account its age, condition and mileage. If your vehicle is covered for its retail value, and it is either written-off, stolen or hijacked without being recovered, the settlement amount will be based on its retail value less the applicable excess, enabling you to replace the vehicle with a similar model.‘Market value’ is lower than the retail value. If you select ‘market value’, we’ll charge you a discounted premium.

I am just curious – What would it cost me per month if I had to insure the contents of my small flat. I have a bachelor flat and the value of the contents is approximately R15k. Roughly, how much would the monthly premium be?

It is almost impossible to give you an indicative quote with so little information. It’s one of those ‘how long is a piece of string’ situations. Please contact our call centre or complete an online quote. Our online insurance application will give you an accurate quote based on your insurance needs.

I stay in a rented flat. Can I still get house insurance even if I don't own the property?

We assume you mean household contents insurance as you would probably not be interested in insuring the structure if you are not the owner. You can certainly get household contents insurance whether you own the property or not.

What is an ‘excess’?

An excess is an agreed amount of money that you, the client, is liable to pay in the event of a car insurance claim being settled. For example, if the excess on your car is R3,000.00, and the damages amount to R50,000.00, MiWay will pay the remaining R47,000.00 once you’ve paid your excess to the repairer. You can discount your premium by choosing a higher excess.

How long do I need to be insured with MiWay before they’ll pay out if I’m in an accident?

There’s no waiting period before you can claim. As long as your insurance is activated, current and paid up you’ll have cover.

What happens in the event of a claim, if I over insured my household contents?

The basic principal of insurance is this: an insurer should place you back in the SAME position you were in, before you suffered the loss you are claiming for. The idea behind insuring your assets is to financially prepare you for a possible future loss. Bottom line? MiWay will replace the items that you lost.

I don't have household insurance, but would like to insure a laptop. What is my best option?

MiWay will insure your laptop but not as a stand-alone risk. You would need to have either a car insurance or contents insurance policy to link it to.

How do I differentiate between ‘private’ and ‘business’ use?

‘Private use’ is when you use your car for private or social purposes, including driving between your home and regular place of work. ‘Business use’ is where the vehicle forms an essential part of the performance of any work or function. If you select ‘Business use’, ‘Private use’ is covered under your policy.

Does the model of the car make a difference to the insurance?

Yes. The premiums differ depending on the make and model of the car.

I have a thatch roof rondavel attached to my house. The house is on a farm in Elgin. Can you provide insurance?

In general we do cover thatch roof properties providing there is a SABS approved lightning conductor installed on the premises. However, the whole risk will need to be underwritten for us to determine whether we will accept your specific risk and, if so, what premium and terms and conditions will apply.

Is my car covered if a friend’s driving it and it’s in an accident?

Do homeowners policies generally cover damage done to property by rodents? And, does a comprehensive car insurance policy cover for damage caused by rodents?

Most policies have an exclusion in their general terms and conditions that exclude damage caused by vermin (rodents). When the exclusion is mentioned in the general terms and conditions it applies to all sections of the policy wording.

Are burglar guards required on a high quality double-glazed aluminium framed windows and sliding doors?

It doesn’t really matter how high quality it is or what the frame is made of. What does matter is whether a burglar can get in more easily. In general burglar bars on windows and security gates on sliding doors do reduce the risk of burglaries and your premium will probably be less if you have this additional security installed.

Can my age affect my premium, specifically if I’m a young driver?

Unfortunately, for young drivers our experience shows that driving risk reduces with age. Basically, older drivers have fewer accidents than young or new drivers. As a result, we base our premiums on a sliding scale where younger drivers pay a higher premium than older drivers and the premium loading reduces over the years.

My brother bought a car and I’m the regular driver. Can I insure the car or must he?

Your brother needs to insure the car with you as the ‘regular driver’ on the policy.

In the event of a theft claim, will you require invoices and/or receipts for the goods that have been stolen? Please advise.

In the unfortunate event of a household insurance claim, MiWay can ask you to prove ownership and value of the items you claim for. It is advisable to keep the invoices to ensure that the correct items are quoted on and replaced in the event of a claim.

I've recently started upgrading some electronic systems in my home like my computer. As a result, I’ve been wondering if there is a cover that would insure these items, taking into account inflation and availability, so that in the event of an unforeseeable situation, like an act of God, for example, I have the peace of mind of being covered in full.

The items will need to be covered under MiHome Stuff (Contents Insurance), which covers all personal belongings kept inside your home and outbuildings at the address noted on your Coversheet, which belong to you or to any members of your household who live with you. Outbuildings, whether they are separate from your home or not, include garages, domestic quarters and storerooms.Insured value You need to insure MiHome Stuff for its total replacement value. This is the cost of replacing your lost or damaged item(s) with new ones. Should you insure MiHome Stuff for an amount less than its replacement value, you will be under-insured and MiWay will pay you proportionately in the event of a claim. What are you covered for under MiHome Stuff? Loss or damage caused by fire and explosion, unless the property is illegally occupied, vacant or abandoned, and earthquakes.

Does MiWay insure Code 3 (rebuilt) vehicles? And, if so, will the premiums/excess be higher than a normal car of the same model/year?

Yes, we cover passenger vehicles (not exceeding 3500kg) that are registered in South Africa and in a roadworthy condition but we only pay out 70% of the market value in the event of a total loss of the vehicle. The premium is based on the whole profile of the client, not only on the vehicle. The standard excess will apply unless the client has opted for a voluntary higher excess.

When a vehicle’s repaired after an accident, do they use replacement parts from the agents or aftermarket parts?

All vehicles under factory warrantee are repaired with original parts from the specific agents. On older vehicles it is a standard procedure in the insurance industry to use new aftermarket parts on certain items – but rest assured that we’ll never compromise on the quality of repairs or the safety of the vehicle. In fact, we guarantee all repair work for a period of two years.

I live with two friends in a flat. How do I go about insuring my household contents?

MiWay will cover a maximum of two unrelated people living together. More than two unrelated people living together is seen as a commune which Miway will not cover. Please contact the MiWay call centre to gain clarity on any further questions that you may have.

What is the ‘standard time frame’ in which you pay out?

There’s no standard-issue answer to this one. The time frame any claim takes depends greatly on the type of incident as well as how soon the required information and documentation is supplied to the MiWay claims department.

What’s the difference between the ‘retail’, ‘trade’ and ‘market’ value of my vehicle?

‘Retail value’ is the higher of the two, it’s the average price a dealer would sell the vehicle for – taking into account its age, condition and mileage. If your vehicle is covered for its retail value, and it is either written-off, stolen or hijacked without being recovered, the settlement amount will be based on its retail value less the applicable excess, enabling you to replace the vehicle with a similar model.‘Market value’ is lower than the retail value. If you select ‘market value’, we’ll charge you a discounted premium.‘Trade’ or ‘book’ value of the vehicle is the average price a dealer will pay you for your vehicle.

I have items in my household, which I’ve had for years and have lost the receipts for. How do I cover these items, like my TV, with MiWay and how does MiWay decide on the value of these items?

MiWay may insist on proof of ownership and value for any item for which you claim. That being said we do take into account the value and age of the item before requesting proof of ownership. You need to insure the TV along with all other personal possession in your house and outbuildings under MiHome Stuff (MiWay's Household Contents Insurance) for its total replacement value. This is the cost of replacing the lost or damage item with a new one. Be sure that you have sufficient cover so that average is not applied at the time of a claim.

I currently have a policy with you and am considering buying another car, which means I might need to make my wife the regular driver on my existing car. She’s Italian and doesn’t have a South African identity document, can I make her the regular driver? If so, how do I go about it?

Not having an SA ID number isn’t a problem, our agents will use her passport number on our system. What she does need is a valid driver's license. Read the excerpt below, straight from our policy wording, that details our ‘valid driver's license’ policy:MiWay only accepts regular drivers with a full and valid driver's license. MiWay will also accept licences obtained in foreign countries provided that the driver is driving legally in South Africa. The option – “International License/Permit" – must be selected on the system and the original date of obtaining the underlying license must be captured to obtain the correct premium. It should be made very clear to the client that the onus rests upon him/her to ensure that he/she is driving legally in South Africa. If the client is not driving legally in SA his/her claims will not be entertained. Please note that in some countries it is possible to obtain a driver's license before the age of 18. If the client is younger than 18, even if they have an international driver’s license/permit, they will not be permitted to drive in South Africa. A person must be 18 years of age or older to be able to drive legally in South Africa. It is always easier for claims to validate a claim if the person does have an international permit but a claim will not be rejected if the person does not have a permit but is driving legally in SA.

Will I be covered in the event that my home contents are damaged due to a power surge?

That’s up to you. Your home contents are covered under MiHome Stuff and you can elect to be covered for power surges and dips.

I therefore will have cover till midnight on the 3rd of the following month.MiWay will change or cancel my policy by giving me 30 days notice. MiWay may give me notice verbally, electronically, by fax or by post to my last known address. MiWay will cancel my policy with immediate effect should I fail to comply with their reasonable instructions or requests. For cancellations I must also take into consideration the sections "Payment not received” and “deliberate or fraudulent acts".Refunds in the event of cancellation of my policy If a premium has been paid for any period beyond the date of cancellation of this policy or insured item, MiWay will refund the relevant portion less any administrative costs, provided that no valid claim has been submitted for that period.

I cannot find my prescription sunglasses. To what extent are they covered under the household contents section of my policy?

There is no cover for ‘lost’ sunglasses under household contents cover. They would have to be ‘stolen’ inside the house for them to be covered. The client would have to report a theft case to the police and the standard excess of R1 000 would apply.Should the individual value of the item be more than R1 500 it would need to be specified under all-risk cover. All-risk covers you for accidental loss or damage anywhere in the world (Your home is part of this).

What effect does the difference between ‘business use’ and ‘professional use’ have on motor vehicle insurance?

Your vehicle can be insured for ‘Private use’, ‘Professional use’ or ‘Business use’.Private or social purposes (driving between your home and regular place of work) is classified as ‘Private use’.‘Professional use’ is where the vehicle forms an essential part of the performance of any work or function as a Lawyer, Doctor, Actuary, Accountant, Architect or an Engineer and it also includes ‘Private use’.‘Business use’ is where the vehicle forms an essential part of the performance of any work or function and it also includes private use.Your coversheet reflects the use that you chose. It’s vital that you insure your vehicle for the correct use in order to have cover.Scenario: If you utilise your vehicle for business purposes, your vehicle is on the road more often than if you only use it for private purposes. The chance of it being stolen or involved in an accident is therefore much greater. The premium for a vehicle being used for business purposes is higher compared to the same vehicle being used only for private purposes. If you insure your vehicle for the incorrect use you will not have cover on your vehicle in the event of a claim, as the premium paid will be incorrect.

Is it compulsory to have a Tracker device installed with MiWay cover and, if so, what’s the function of a Tracker device and which device does MiWay require me to install?

Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, MiWay may require that you have a tracking device installed in your car. Having a tracking device installed in your car may result in a reduced premium because a tracking device increases the chances of recovering a vehicle in the unfortunate event of it been stolen, thereby reducing the risk. If you don’t have a tracking device, we’ll recommend a tracking supplier when we chat about your car insurance options.

I was insured with MiWay and I was involved in a car accident but I hadn’t paid my car insurance premium that month because I was retrenched at work. Can MiWay assist me with my predicament?

Is it true that Miway has different excess amounts, depending on what time of day the accident took place, and the day of the week (weekdays vs. weekends)? Also, is it true that you give low premiums to attract new clients only to increase the premiums extensively at the next review period?

MiWay does have an additional excess if the driver of the vehicle is not the regular driver (as shown on policy cover sheet), younger than 24, and if the accident occurs between 20H00 and 06H00 on weekends. However, it is definitely not true that MiWay gives lower premiums to attract new clients. We do in some cases apply higher than average premium increases at review stage, but this is determined on a case-by-case basis and is dependent on numerous factors.

What happens if I was involved in an accident and the car was written off but my panel beater reckons that the car can be fixed?

In the event of a total loss, you (the client) have the choice of making use of your own panel beater. I’ve got shortfall insurance with MiWay and with another insurance company. My car was written off and the company is paying it off. Is MiWay going to pay me back the money that was allocated for the finance house?

We’re not 100% sure of what you’re asking or if we’ve understood you correctly so we’ll give you an explanation of exactly what credit shortfall insurance is…Credit Shortfall Insurance, also known as Top-Up Insurance or Gap Insurance, is insurance cover that can be added onto your existing car insurance policy. It is best explained by way of an example:You have financed your car and took out comprehensive insurance (as this is required by the finance house which granted you the car loan). After a few months your car is stolen and you report this to your insurance company. In those few months your car has depreciated by say 20%, and the Insurance Company pay out at either the retail or market value of the car. In many cases this will be less than the outstanding loan on the car.The insurance company will also deduct the excess that you have to pay before they pay the balance to the bank, which financed your car. You now find yourself in a situation where you have no car and after the insurance payout you still owe the bank a considerable amount. Credit Shortfall insurance will fill this gap and pay out the difference between the insurance payment and the outstanding loan amount.

I live in a rural area, in a mud hut with a thatch roof, no security gate, no fence and no wall because there are no burglars. Can the contents of my home be insured?

Unfortunately we do not cover mud huts as it is probably not built to any minimum standard. But if you feel you do, you would need to put some minimum security in place before MiWay would consider covering your contents.

I inherited a few furniture items as well as a bookcase full of various books, which are very old, from my grandmother. How will the value of this ‘inheritance’ be determined?

When considering the value of items in your household, it is important to remember to value them at full replacement value and not their current value. Also remember to include all items inside your household, like clothing, curtains, linen, furniture, cutlery, etc. In the case of items purchased recently that is fairly easy to establish the current value, however in the case of jewellery, watches and inherited items we suggest you take the time to get the them valued by an appropriate source.

I've got a learners license, valid up until later next year and I'm busy working towards getting my driver's license. Can I insure my car with you guys? If so, can you tell me how to go about it?

However, we can insure your vehicle with you as the policy holder with the details of the regular driver, the person who drives the vehicle most often, assuming it’s not you.In terms of our policy, in order for you to have a valid claim, the person driving the vehicle must have a valid drivers license, this could also include a valid learners license. In the case of a learners license a claim will only be valid if the person is accompanied by a person with a valid drivers license.

I want to know if I can insure my laptop with my desktop and my cellphone through MiWay. I am an existing client.

Yes, of course you can! Your desktop and laptop can be insured under home contents cover. If you travel with your laptop it would be advisable to cover it under specified all risk insurance, which would cover the laptop when away from home. Your cell phone should also be covered under specified all risk insurance.

What happens if my car is stolen, written off etc? Is there a waiting period for stolen cars? Is there a waiting period for cars that are write offs?

Good question! No, there isn’t a specific waiting period for stolen cars. The time frame any claim takes depends greatly on the type of incident as well as how soon the required information and documentation is supplied to the MiWay claims department.

Is the 3rd party also insured? If I were to drive into another vehicle, would my insurance pay for repairs on the other vehicle as well as mine?

Provided that you have a valid claim under your MiWheels policy, MiWay will indemnify you for damages sustained to your vehicle. We’ll also consider indemnifying any third party for damages, based on the circumstances and/or merit of the incident/loss. As the liability is automatically transferred to MiWay when you have a valid claim, MiWay may defend and/or attempt any recovery against any Third Party on your behalf.

If I get into an accident outside of South Africa, will my excess differ?

The excess amount won’t differ in the unfortunate event of you having an accident outside SA borders. When you have a valid claim in terms of your policy, you must pay the basic excess as well as any applicable additional excesses as noted on the Coversheet. Under the MiWay MiWheels Car Insurance policy you’re covered in the following countries: South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe BUT cover outside of South Africa is limited to vehicles used for strictly private use and for damages to your own vehicle only.

I’m 23-years old, and bought a 2009 car last month. All the insurance companies seem very expensive and they’re all telling the same story – apparently I’m high risk because I’m young. Does Miway have special cover for young adults?

Unfortunately MiWay doesn’t have a specific product for young drivers. You see, our experience shows that driving risk reduces with age. Basically, older drivers have fewer accidents than young or new drivers. As a result we base our premiums on a sliding scale where younger drivers pay a higher premium than older drivers, and the premium loading reduces over the years. That being said, we do rate individuals on their specific profile and/or Drive Style. Please contact our call centre to find out more and complete a quote.

I have a 4x4. If I want to use it off road is the premium higher than if I don't?

There’s no higher premium or special condition to you using your 4x4 off road. However, it’s important that you’re not reckless or negligent as this could lead to a claim been repudiated.

What is insurable interest?

When insuring an asset the insurance company will want to establish that you have an insurable interest in the property, in other words, you must stand to suffer a direct financial loss if there is a claim. For example, if your car is damaged in an accident, the value of your car has been reduced, and whether you pay to have your car repaired or sell it for scrap, you have suffered a financial loss resulting from the accident. An insurance company might not wish to cover your asset if you are not directly responsible for it.

Can a person under 25-years old with a valid learners driver license drive my vehicle while accompanied by me, the regular driver? Will MiWay pay the full claim if this person is involved in a MVA and there is claimable damage caused to the vehicle?

Any person with a valid learners license can drive the your vehicle provided that they are accompanied by a person with a valid driver’s license at all times. Should an accident take happen, the claim will be entertained provided all policy terms and conditions were met and that the correct regular driver is noted on the policy. In the event of a person (not the regular driver) under the age of 24 driving the vehicle at the time of the accident, an additional excess will apply.

What happens in the case where someone hits another car while they have been drinking and driving? Does the other person go to their insurance company? Does third party pay for the other person’s car? Please advise.

If you have insured your vehicle through MiWay and are involved in an accident where the driver of your vehicle was under the influence of alcohol or drugs or has a concentration of alcohol in the blood exceeding the legal limit; or fails a breathalyser test; or refuses to give either a breath or blood sample the claim will be rejected as these are exclusions under our policy. The other person who suffered damages should claim from their own insurer (providing they have insurance) who will entertain their claim and then institute a recovery on their behalf. The recovery will be against the person in their personal capacity, if the claim was rejected by the insurer of the person driving under the influence. The RAF only covers bodily injuries not material damages therefore the damages to the other party’s vehicle will not be covered by ‘third party’ as referred to in your question.

Do you insure vehicles that have been rebuilt?

Yes, we cover passenger vehicles (not exceeding 3500kg) that are registered in South Africa and in a roadworthy condition BUT we only pay out 70% of the market value in the event of a total loss of the vehicle.

Most insurance companies are concerned about the first five years after your sequestration as you can’t qualify for a loan or enter into a credit or financial agreement while you are sequestrated.

If I have a cover with MiWay that includes the car hire option and my car breaks down due to mechanical/electrical faults, which are so serious that my service centre cold not repair and require a specialised auto electrician, can I get car hire while my car is being attended to?

Car hire is optional add-on cover for a specific vehicle for which an additional premium is paid. You can only use the hired car when you have a valid claim on the vehicle that you took the car hire option on. To answer your question; Mechanical and electrical failure are excluded under the MiWheels vehicle cover, so you won’t be able to get a hire car while your vehicle is being attended to.

Do you insure people under 25 years of age who drive high performance cars?

Yes, on both counts. We insure people under 25 years of age and we insure people who drive high performance cars.

Why does my premium increase every year even though the value of my car is depreciating?

Unless you have chosen otherwise, your car is not only covered for theft but also for repairs in the event of an accident. The labour cost of repairing your vehicle and parts used increases every year, so the unfortunate consequence is that your premium increases in line with these costs.

Is it true that my marital status can affect my car insurance premium?

Yes, we do use marital status when calculating risk. Our experience has shown that married or co-habiting customers pose a lower risk than single or divorced people do. This could be because single people often go out, are on the road more and often leave their homes unoccupied.

What factors does MiWay take into account when determining what car insurance premium I pay?

Numerous factors are taken into account when determining your premium. To name a few: the make and model of your motor vehicle, where you live, where your vehicle is kept at night, who the driver of the vehicle is, what purpose your vehicle is used for and your previous claims history. It is very important that you are honest when answering these and any other questions as your premium is based on your answers.

When my vehicle is damaged in a collision, can I have it repaired at the panel beater of my choice?

MiWay has a preferred panel of repairers with a proven track record in the industry, covering all manufacturer approvals for different makes of vehicles. We prefer that repairs go through this network. We do however allow our clients to choose their own repairer. In these rare cases we will have a disclaimer signed by the client, which will distance us from any defective workmanship or issues that the client may experience at his/her panel beater.

What are the different types of car insurance?

Fortunately, Car Insurance in South Africa is not a complicated affair. There are primarily three types of car insurance – Comprehensive Car Insurance, Third Party Fire and Theft, and Third Party only.Comprehensive car insurance provides the widest cover and covers for theft and hijacking, damages due to an accident, fire or explosion and natural disasters like hail and floods. Comprehensive car insurance cover also includes damage to the vehicle’s glass and liability to other parties as a result of an accident.Third Party Fire and Theft insurance provides insurance cover for any damage you may cause to the vehicle of another person, and the accidental death or injuries of third parties involved in the same accident. You will also be compensated for the loss of your vehicle due to attempted theft, theft or hijacking, as well as any damage to your vehicle that was caused by fire, lightning or explosions. The main difference between ‘Comprehensive’ and ‘Third Party Fire and Theft’ is that your car is not covered against accidental damage. ‘Third Party Fire and Theft’ is the second most expensive of the three car insurance types.Third Party Only insurance is the cheapest of the three and provides insurance cover for any damage you may cause to the vehicle of another person as well as the accidental death or injuries of third parties involved in the same accident. You have no cover under this insurance type against the loss of, or damage to your own vehicle.

Do you use the tracking device in my car to decide the outcome of my claim?

The purpose of your tracking device is to assist with the recovery of your vehicle following a theft or hijacking. If your tracking records are required on any other type of claim, we’ll explain why and get your permission to access the information. In the pats, tracking devices have proven to be a useful tool in validating claims quickly and efficiently, and in most instances to the client’s benefit. If you want

If I have car hire on my policy, and it's for 20 days, am I right in saying that I need to return the hire car within 20 days even if my claim hasn’t been finalised yet? And, when is the claim finalised, after payment is made or what?

The hire car is available for the maximum period you selected or until your car insurance claim is finalised, whichever date is the earliest. A claim is finalised once the decision of the claim has been communicated to the client and once payment is processed to either the client or finance house (unless vehicle is repairable). If want more info please get in touch with our claims department, they’ll be happy to answer any questions you have.

What happens on the anniversary of the premium?

Once a year, normally on the anniversary of your policy, we look at your policy and adjust the premium. We look at various factors including the value of your car, what it costs to repair your car, your claims history in the preceding year, how you have managed your account with us etc. Please don’t hesitate to contact us to discuss your premium during the rerate cycle.

What does it mean when they say that the 20% residual amount is R20 000?

A residual amount has nothing to do with a car insurance policy, but we’ll try to answer your question as best we can…A residual deal refers to a finance agreement that includes a balloon payment, or residual value, which you must pay at the end of the finance term. The residual value can be relatively large compared with your monthly instalments. When the finance term ends, you have two options: you can either sell the car and hope that the selling price will be enough to cover the residual value, or you can ask the bank to grant you further finance for the residual amount.Hope that helps? If you’re still confused, please give us a call and one of our super-friendly MiWayeans will do their best to help.

Does MiWay also charge more, simply because you're a new driver or because you’ve just gotten your drivers license?

Driving experience and age of the license is very important when determining a car insurance premium. Generally new drivers with a recent drivers licence do have a higher premium. However, there are a handful of other factors that influence your premium. So, call us or request a quote online to get a better idea of what your premium would be.

Is it compulsory to have an immobiliser in your car to get insurance?

Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, we might require additional anti-theft devices in your vehicle, the details of which will be confirmed by the agent over the phone or when you complete a quote online. You see, theft and hijack cover is conditional upon the approval or installation of an approved immobiliser or anti-hijack device in your vehicle.Contact our call centre or complete an online quote to find out if the anti-theft devices that are currently in your car are in fact adequate.

Someone at MiWay called me for insurance but I have a question: Will MiWay carry over my insurance cover from my current insurance policy, which I’ve had for over a year or will I have to start from scratch with MiWay ie. lose the cover I’ve accrued over the past year or so?

When joining MiWay or any other broker or insurer you will not get any credit in terms of no claims bonuses etc. BUT we will recognise your insurance profile that you’ve built up over the previous year and calculate your insurance premium according to that profile.

Can I re-instate my policy with MiWay if I’ve cancelled it before?

No problem! Yes, you can re-instate your MiWay policy if you cancelled it.

I bought a brand new vehicle in February 2009 and I insured it with MiWay. It went in for its first service at 15,000km and they suspect that there’s a fault with the gearbox. They don’t have a courtesy vehicle to offer me. Can MiWay help me out with a courtesy vehicle while my car is being repaired?

MiWay's warranty product does have alternative transport up to R1000 but we assume you do not have a warranty product as your car was brand new and probably has a factory warranty? The MiWay comprehensive car insurance product does have optional car hire but only comes into effect on a claimable event such as accidental, intentional and theft/ hijacking claims. So, unfortunately we can’t help you out. Sorry!

Does MiWay offer insurance for rental vehicles? I’m looking to insure a small fleet of both privately and company-owned vehicles.

No, not currently. We don’t insure any vehicle that is used for driving instruction, towing, hiring and carrying passengers for which payment is received.

I have a vehicle that is imported from Lesotho but can’t be registered in South Africa. I need to insure the vehicle in South Africa because I live here. It’s for my personal use. Can MiWay assist me?

Unfortunately we do not offer accident, fire or theft cover for vehicles not registered in South Africa. However, you can insure vehicles not registered in South Africa through MiWay for third party liability cover, which would give you peace of mind in the unfortunate event of you being the guilty party in an accident.

Can I insure a stolen and recovered vehicle with MiWay?

That’s a straightforward question. Here’s a straightforward answer…Yes, you can, as long as the vehicle has its original identification numbers or has been issued with SAPVIN numbers.

I have heard that there’s insurance that pays the outstanding amount on your finance agreement should your car be written-off and the insured value your insurer pays to settle a claim is less than the outstanding amount? Is this true?

Yes, it’s true. It’s called Credit Shortfall insurance. For Credit Shortfall to apply, your vehicle must be uneconomical to repair or have been stolen or hijacked and not recovered. How does it work? Well, MiWay will pay the shortfall when the amount you owe in terms of a finance agreement (as defined in the Credit Agreements Act) with a finance company exceeds the insured value we pay to settle a claim. For credit shortfall to apply, your vehicle must be uneconomical to repair or have been stolen or hijacked and not recovered.Under MiWay's Credit Shortfall product, you won’t be covered for the following: • The excess on your vehicle claim • Arrear instalments due and interest on them • Any early settlement penalties • Additional finance charges • Any refundable amounts added to your finance agreement over and above the purchase price of the vehicle • Insurance premiums, motor warranties and maintenance programmes which must be refunded to you by the company that administers the policy or warranty • The credit shortfall on vehicle sound equipment or non-standard vehicle accessories which are not specified on your Coversheet and which form part of the finance agreement.

Who are MiWay underwritten by and how long has MiWay been in operation?

MiWay insurance products are underwritten on it's own licence. MiWay started operating at the end of February 2008. If you want to find out more, please take a look at the MiWay Company Profile on this website.

What happens if I don't take my car in for an Inspection?

This is a non-negotiable. Car Insurance cover is conditional upon the inspection of your vehicle. It’s your responsibility to ensure the vehicle gets inspected. It’s that simple. One of our approved inspection centres inspects the vehicle to determine whether there is any existing damage to the vehicle, to confirm if the immobiliser is adequate and in good working order and to obtain the details of any non-standard accessories and sound equipment. This inspection is necessary to avoid any problems in the unfortunate event of needing to claim.

What’s the difference between Theft and Hijack Cover and Additional Theft Cover? And, why is it compulsory to take the R25k accident benefit? Please explain.

Additional Theft Cover is optional. You can select it if there’s a security requirement eg. to fit an anti-hijack or immobiliser to the vehicle. Theft and Hijack Cover is conditional upon the installation or approval of a specific security system being in place in the vehicle. If you don’t want to install the device we are prepared to take the risk for a higher premium, hence the Additional Theft Cover at an additional premium. However, the Additional Theft Cover is not available should a tracking device be required on the vehicle.Bottom line? Both Theft and Hijack Cover and Additional Theft Cover provide theft cover – one will just come at a higher price if the vehicle doesn’t have the required security in place. The R25k accident benefit should be regarded as a product feature rather than a compulsory benefit. While developing the product we decided to include it in the product for all policy holders, which enables us to do it very cheaply.

Do I qualify for a reduction in my premium once I have turned 25?

Your premium is determined by numerous factors. Potentially, you’ll get a cheaper premium as you get older, assuming all other factors stay the same. MiWay consultants are committed to finding the best premium and product for each individual, so please don’t hesitate to call us the day after your 25th birthday, we’d love to be able to give you a lower premium as a birthday present!

How long does it take you to pay out after I’ve been in a accident?

It really does depend on the location of the incident and extent of the damages. We aim to assess the vehicle within 48 hours and have the claim finalised within 5 days and we have a specially selected panel of repairers to suit all makes and models of vehicle. We prefer to send the vehicle to a repairer of our choice so that we can maintain repair quality standards and have recourse in event of any issues, which is why we don’t ‘pay out’ as you referred to in your question. You can get in touch with our claims department on 0860 64 64 64 to register a claim or get assistance by completing the claims form online.

I recently hit an animal on the road and it damaged my car. I have comprehensive car insurance with MiWay. Will I be able to claim for the damages?

Yes, you can claim for damages. There’s an excess applicable and we’ll need to assess the vehicle to ascertain the extent of the damage. Please note that any additional damage caused to the vehicle from continuing to use it won’t be covered and we urge you to arrange for the assessment of the vehicle as soon as possible. Please contact us as soon as possible on 0860 64 64 64 or complete the claims notification form online so that we can help you and get the ball rolling.

I have a car but I don't have a license at the moment. How can I insure my car for the time being until I get my license?

If you’re the regular driver of your vehicle the policy will be declined, as we can’t insure a vehicle where the regular driver doesn’t have a valid drivers license. However, we can insure your vehicle with you as the policy holder but stating the regular driver details as being the person who drives the vehicle most often (assuming it is not you). In terms of our policy, in order for you to have a valid claim, the person driving the vehicle must have a valid drivers license, this could also include a valid learners license. In the case of a learners license a claim will only be valid if the person is accompanied by someone with a valid drivers license.

Why do you say that MiWay does not penalise you when you’re a young driver on TV but on your website it’s stated otherwise?

MiWay doesn’t ‘penalise’ younger drivers. Unfortunately for young drivers our experience shows that driving risk reduces with age – older drivers have fewer accidents than young or new drivers. As a result we base our premiums on a sliding scale where older drivers get cheaper car insurance premiums than younger drivers. The premium loading reduces over the years.

I bought a car that was written off, but the damages are minor and can be fixed. Will I be able to insure the car?

Yes, MiWay will cover rebuilt passenger vehicles (not exceeding 3500kg) that are registered in South Africa and in a roadworthy condition. However, we only pay out 70% of the market value in the event of a total loss of the vehicle.

If petrol instead of diesel was put in a car, does the insurance cover the damages?

Ultimately the garage should be held responsible if incorrect/contaminated fuel was put into the vehicle. Please contact the MiWay claims department for further assistance in the event of being unsuccessful with the claim against the garage whereby consideration will be given to circumstances and further advice given if possible.

If I have a policy with MiWay and want to cancel it, what is the procedure and what are the implications of cancelation?

Below is an excerpt from the MiWay policy documentation regarding cancellations.Policy changes and cancellation Any change or amendment which I make will be effective from the time and date agreed to. I have to give MiWay a months’ notice prior to cancelling my policy, which entails that a pro-rata premium could be collected at the next collection date.Scenario: Should I contact MiWay to cancel my policy on the 4th of a month, the cancellation will be effective from the 4th of the following month.

I was in an accident this month and, according to my insurance, my debit for this month has not been paid, which I don’t understand as I have a good stable job. As a result, I’m not covered for this month and therefore cannot fix my car. I want to switch to MiWay insurance this coming month. If I do this, will you be able to help me fix my car or not?

Unfortunately, MiWay will not be able to help you repair your car as you were not insured with MiWay at the time of the incident. Please note that MiWay would have the same rules in the event of premium non-payment i.e. you would not be covered if the premium is not paid for the month in question.

I don't have a driver's license but I'm in the process of obtaining one. Can I still insure my car with you and what will be premium be?

If you are the regular driver of your vehicle the policy will be declined, as we cannot insure a vehicle where the regular driver does not have a valid drivers license. However, we can insure your vehicle with you as a policy holder, stating the regular driver details as being the person who drives the vehicle most often (assuming it’s not you). In terms of our policy, in order for you to have a valid claim, the person driving the vehicle must have a valid drivers license, this could also include a valid learners license. In the case of a learners license, a claim will only be valid if the person is accompanied by someone with a valid drivers license. Please contact our call centre to complete a car insurance quote and to determine what premium you would pay.

If I insure my vehicle through Miway for the replacement value and I have an accident within the same year and the cost to repair my vehicle is R105k but I purchased the vehicle for R190k (the full retail at the time was R195k). What 'retail’ and/or replacement value' will be used to finalise my claim? Will the vehicle be written off or repaired? And why?

You have the option to cover your vehicle for Retail or Market value. Depending on which one you choose, this will be used to determine the value of the vehicle at the time of the loss. If a vehicle is brand new then we would use the ‘New list price’ from the Auto Dealers Guide and if not available then the price from an appropriate source (e.g a vehicle dealer). In the scenario given, the value of the damage to the vehicle is 54% of the value of the vehicle at the time of the loss. Although each case if different and we would consider the merits on a case before making a final decision generally we will only decide to write the vehicle off and not repair if the damage to the vehicle exceeds 65% (which may vary based on vehicle type, make and model which will be determined by MiWay’s assessing department) of the current value. If damages are less than this amount then the vehicle is repairable.

If my car was hijacked and the insurance pays the bank the market value, there is a shortfall, which the client has to pay. I want to know what happens if the car is later recovered? What benefits will the client get and does s/he still have to pay the shortfall amount?

If you have insured your vehicle for market value and failed to take out credit shortfall cover for the difference between the value of the vehicle and what you owe the finance house, then you will be liable to the finance house for the shortfall. When a claim for a stolen vehicle is settled, the vehicle becomes the property of MiWay. Should the vehicle be recovered after we have settled the claim, then the vehicle is our property to dispose of as we wish. It is important to ensure that you have sufficient cover so that there is no shortfall with the finance house if the vehicle is a total loss. You are welcome to give us a call to speak to one of our specialists who can advise you and tell you about our innovative ‘Credit Shortfall Cover’.

Is MiWay’s Motor Warranty cover free with all vehicle insurance?

Afraid not. The motor warranty product is a stand-alone product. It’s not free or included in any of the vehicle insurance products.

I have a second hand Alfa Romeo with 70,000kms on the clock. I understand that I have to have the vehicle inspected to determine my premium, but I just want to know ‘price range’, taking into account that I paid R43,000.00 for the vehicle and it’s in very good condition, and taking into account my age, driving experience etc. I just want to get an idea of the lowest and/or highest possible premium I can expect to pay?

Your ‘ideal’ profile should get you a very competitive car insurance premium but it’s a tricky question to answer without knowing all the facts. Please contact our call centre or complete an online quote via the website to find out what your premium would be.

If my side mirror is hit by a passing motorbike and the cost is less than my excess, how will the claim be handled? Bearing in mind that I don’t have the driver’s details – he drove off and didn’t have a number plate.

The excess amount is the first amount payable in the event of a loss. If the damages to the insured item are less than the excess amount, the client has no claim and will be liable for the repair cost.

My vehicle was involved in an accident while being driven by my spouse who is not a regular driver and has a learners' license. There was another fully licensed person in the car at the time of the accident. Will MiWay repair the vehicle?

The manner in which MiWay will finalise any claim will depend on the extent of the damage and provided all terms and conditions of the policy were complied with, of which, driving with a valid license is one of the conditions of cover. Please contact our claims department if you had an incident so that we can get all the required information from you, which will give us what we need to help you.

I’m currently insured with MiWay and was recently involved in an accident with someone who is not insured. None of us admitted to guilt as we were not sure who was to blame for the accident. He was coming out of a parking bay on the left hand side of the road and I was traveling down the road in the middle lane, I then changed to the far left lane and that's when the accident happened. Who is liable for the cost of repairs in a case like this?

We recommend that each party claim from his/her own company for damages sustained to the vehicles. The legal departments of the respective companies will assess the merits of the incident and the possibility of a recovery of costs incurred.

How long does MiWay take to finalise/ authorise claims?

The period taken to finalise a claim really does depend on the location of the incident and extent of the damages. We aim to assess the vehicle within 48 hours and have claim finalised within 5 days. Please get in touch with our claims department on 0860 64 64 64 to register a claim or complete the claims form on our website so that we can help you.

I’m currently insured with one of your competitors and have received an increase of 18% on my premium after a year. I think that this is a ridiculous amount, so I’m looking to change insurance companies. However, I would need to know what premium increase to expect before signing a contract. Please assist?

It’s difficult to predict what a premium increase may be as it depends on various factors and timing. We are committed to keeping premiums and premium increases as low as possible, so if you remain a good risk client (pay all of your premiums and have an acceptable claims profile) your premium increase should not be more than inflationary.

My husband hit a post at the car wash and it left a dent in the front of our truck. I decided not to claim it from my insurance but now I regret it. Is it too late to claim it even if I got our truck fixed? I do have a receipt to prove that it was damaged.

In this case your actions may result in us not entertaining your claim. In terms of the insurance contract you have with us, you are required to inform us of all incidents that could give rise to a claim within 30 days, and that you are required to get MiWay’s consent before doing any repairs. Without all of the information relating to the incident and the repairs, it’s not possible to make an informed decision. Please contact our call centre as soon as possible so that we can gather all the necessary information and be in a position to advise of the decision on the claim.

My car’s a 2000 model. Can I insure it?

Yes, MiWay does insure older vehicles. A 2000 model car is not that old so it should definitely be on the MiWay system. If the vehicle does not exist in our system we will agree a value of the vehicle (with you the policy holder) and insure the vehicle for that value.

Once my claim has been approved, when is my excess balance due?

The excess amount is the first amount payable by you. In the event of a total loss claim, the excess amount will be payable and due immediately on authorisation of the claim. In terms of a claim where a vehicle is repairable, the excess amount will be payable directly to the repairer on or before order any spare parts, and/or on delivery of such vehicle after repairs. Hope that answers your question!

If I’m stuck on the road over the weekend, will MiWay ask me to pay the tow truck on the spot or is that included in my insurance monthly premium?

Yes. Roadside assistance automatically applies to each vehicle (with a mass less than 3500 kg) noted on your Coversheet under our MiHelp (MiWay's roadside assistance) benefit. You’ll be covered for breakdown and a tow will be arranged to the nearest service provider or place of safekeeping. The tow in cost on the initial tow will be covered.Provided that you have a valid claim under your MiWay MiWheels Car Insurance policy, in the event of an incident and/or accident, where the vehicle requires to be towed, you will be covered for reasonable towing and storage costs to tow and store the vehicle at the nearest repairer, on condition that you utilised the services of a MiWay approved towing operator.

If I claim and I have a courtesy car for 30 days, why do I have to take the car back on the same day that I receive the vehicle back? Surely, as I pay my premium every month, I should be able to keep the courtesy car for the 30 days max? Please explain?

Please see the extract from the MiWay policy wording below. It states that, “the rental vehicle is available for the maximum period selected or until the claim is finalised, whichever is the earliest.”Car hire Following an incident for which I have had a valid claim, MiWay will provide me with a hired car, where my vehicle is: • damaged and being repaired • damaged and not drivable • stolen or hijackedI will need to pay: • The security deposit, running costs as well as the collection and delivery fees • The excess in the event of a claim for loss of or damage to the hired carThe hired car is available for the maximum period I selected or until my claim is finalised if it is within the selected period, whichever date is the earliest. My Coversheet reflects the period that I chose.

Why do all other companies offer 24-hour household, medical and legal assistance with the motor policy but MiWay doesn’t? I was under the impression that it was included.

At MiWay are obviously not in a position to comment on the benefits offered by all other insurance companies, but after a little investigation we can confirm that most companies only offer 24-hour roadside assistance with a motor policy. 24-hour household, medical and legal assistance is normally offered free with a household contents policy.

My husband drove my car and got into an accident. He’s not the regular driver but he is older than 24. What is the excess going to be – R2,500 or R5,000?

In the case, as you have described, we will only charge the standard excess. The additional excess as you have mentioned would only apply if he was under the age of 24.

Do you have to pay additional excess if you are between 25 and 30 years of age? And, for vehicles under R150 000, will additional excess have to be paid if a tracking device is not fitted?

Firstly, no additional excesses are payable for the conditions you mention. Please contact our call centre and ask the agent about any additional excesses that may apply.Secondly, if a tracker is a requirement of your cover and is not fitted, and is relevant to the claim, there will be no cover.

How much will you charge to insure a brand new car for a first time driver?

Numerous factors are taken into account when determining a client’s premium. To name a few: the make and model of your motor vehicle, where you live and work, where your vehicle is kept at night, how far you drive to work, who the driver of the vehicle is, what purpose your vehicle is used for and your previous claims history. It is very important that you are honest when answering these and any other questions as your premium is based on your answers.

What kind of luxury car do you rent for your customers as courtesy cars?

You have an option to add vehicle hire to your car insurance policy. The class of vehicle and the duration of the car hire while your car is been repaired is chosen by you at the sales stage.

If my car is in an accident, can I use any panel beater I want to? Or, does MiWay insist that I use a particular panel beater?

MiWay has a preferred panel of repairers with a proven track record in the industry and which cover all manufacturer approvals for different makes of vehicles. We prefer that repairs go through this network. However, we do allow our clients to choose their own repairer. In these rare cases we will have a disclaimer signed by the client, which will distance us from any defective workmanship or issues that the client may experience at his/her panel beater.

My vehicle was written off after a MVA. I have comprehensive cover and the insurer paid out the retail value. The vehicle was purchased in 2006 and had 16,000 kilometres on the clock. I have a few questions: How is the retail value worked out? Do most insurers work on the retail value? How will I know the payment is correct? And, is there compensation for the low kilometres?

The value of the vehicle is calculated at the time of the loss, so the mileage at the time of purchase is irrelevant. Generally you can insure your vehicle for ‘Retail’ or ‘Market’ value and this obviously affects the amount paid out at the time of the claim. ‘Market’ value is the average of the ‘trade’ and ‘retail’ values and is lower than retail. The TransUnion Auto Dealers Guide is used to determine the ‘market’ or ‘retail’ value at the time of the loss. This book also provides guidelines for any additional amounts to be added or deducted due to the condition and mileage of the vehicle (The kilometre and condition chart).Should you doubt how the settlement was calculated you should be able to request the information from your insurer, after which you can consult with TransUnion or an appropriate source to establish if the values are correct.

Is MiWay insurance specifically for woman?

No, MiWay is not specifically for women. However, we do take numerous factors into account when determining a client’s premium. One of which is gender. Women do generally get cheaper premiums as they are often seen as less risky drivers.

Why do women pay less for car insurance?

Women do not necessarily pay less for insurance. There are many factors which make up an individual’s premium, factors which are more important than gender. For example, the value of car, what it costs to repair, when the car is driven, whether a car is for personal or business use etc.Generally insurers’ statistics probably show that a woman’s risk profile is less risky than that of a man. Whether women are in fact better drivers is a debate that has been going on probably since women first began to drive.Women’s insurance or insurance for women is something that is advertised by some insurers as a unique sales proposition, but those same insurers will not turn away a man's business if it comes their way.

I have a policy with MIWAY and I was involved in an accident with a third party who does not have insurance. Do I have to lodge a claim with my insurance and claim the excess from the third party or do I just pay an excess leaving MiWay to follow up with the third party?

An excess is payable by you (the client) whenever a claim is submitted and it is the first payment that needs to be made in the event of a claim – regardless of whether it was your fault or not.The administrative cost of a car insurance claim is the same, regardless of who is at fault. If you are not at fault, you can claim the excess amount back from the guilty party. Unfortunately, this can take a long time, especially if the guilty party isn’t insured. MiWay's legal recoveries department will do their utmost to recover your excess free of charge. There are certain circumstances when an excess cannot be recovered, for example: • You (the insured) don’t have the guilty party’s details; • The guilty party does not have any income or assets to attach; • The legal costs outweigh the recovery costs (excess amount); • The guilty party cannot be traced; and/or • The merits of the claim do not justify the recovery of the excess.

I was involved in an accident, which was my fault. I have no insurance and the other party brought me a quote from panel beaters which he wants me to pay (R5,383). He says he does not want to claim from the insurance as they have claimed for two vehicles this year already and another claim will increase his premium by 8 or 9 thousand rand. If I admit that the accident was my fault, why would his premium be increased?

This is a tricky one. It’s very difficult to comment on your question without knowing all the facts as there may be extenuating circumstances that the other party has not divulged or is not aware of.

My Comprehensive car insurance policy came into effect on 1 March 2010. However, my personal circumstances have changed and I now need to change my policy to Third party, fire and theft cover. How do I go about doing this? Do I get penalised? What are the implications on my policy and premium if any?

All you need to do is contact our call centre to change your cover from Comprehensive to Third party, fire and theft cover. The only implication will be less cover for a lower premium.

Can l pay my insurance premium via cash deposit?

Will the fact that I am a pensioner affect my premium and the excess that I pay?

Being a pensioner could certainly affect your premium – due to your age, not the fact that you are a pensioner. The fact that you are a pensioner does not affect the excess you would need to pay in the unfortunate event of having an accident. MiWay does have a flexible excess structure, for example, a client may choose to discount their premium by choosing the higher excess.

Am I covered if I lock my keys in the car?

Hi I recently bought a 2010 model vehicle and I am 23-years old. I know that I’m a ‘high risk’ as a result of my age. Can I insure the car under my father's name? He has a valid drivers license. Does the car need to be transferred into his name?

Transferring the vehicle into your father’s name or insuring the car in your father’s name is not an option. The important issue is that of the regular driver as that is where the risk lies. It is important that the regular driver is stated on your policy, which in your case would be you.

Does Miway do windscreen replacements and, if so, what is the excess on a claim of this nature?

Assuming you have glass specified on your cover, MiWay will replace your windscreen. The current excess is R500. You may want to consider repairing your windscreen if it is repairable. Please contact our claims department to find out more.

My husband and I bought a car for my sister-in-law. Her parents offered to pay the insurance, but the car is in my husband’s name. Can my father-in-law insure it in his name or should the insurer also be the owner of the vehicle?

The owner of the vehicle should ideally insure the vehicle. Your father-in-law's banking details can be specified on the policy. What is more important is that your sister-in-law is noted as the regular driver of the car.

When does MiWay not pay out a claim?

Taking a decision not to pay out a claim is not taken lightly. Possible reasons for not paying out a claim could be that the customer has not paid their premiums or if the customer was not truthful when applying for insurance.

What is the benefit of NOT taking our insurance cover?

There is really no benefit in not taking out insurance to cover your valuable possessions. Self-insuring may be an option if you can somehow avoid a loss for a very long time.

I was involved in an accident and my insurance declared my car a write off, I bought the car for R100 000, the settlement from the bank is R104 000 and the cost for repairs was R64 000. My insurance told me they were only assigned R59 00 to repair the vehicle. I've agreed that the car is a write off but they only want to pay the finance company R36 757 instead of R79 065 market value. My insurance has deducted R36 626 for excess (based on Age, D/L less than 2 years, first period, total loss & Towing). I want to know a) where are these deductions coming from? And b) Are they allowed to do this?

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately it is very difficult for us to provide an answer with the information above. We suggest that you contact the ombudsman for short term insurance to assist you with this matter.

What is the basic excess amount that I will pay on comprehensive car insurance and household contents insurance?

My company bought the bakkie (paid in full) and I am paying the company back. The vehicle is not in my name yet. Can I take insurance out on the vehicle?

Insurance companies prefer it if the owner of a vehicle is responsible for insuring the vehicle. This is referred to as ‘insurable interest’, which is defined as follws:“When insuring an asset the insurance company will want to establish that you have an insurable interest in the property ie. You must stand to suffer a direct financial loss if there is a claim. An insurance company might not wish to cover your asset if you are not directly responsible for it.An individual has an insurable interest in something when loss or damage to it would cause that individual to suffer a financial loss or certain other kinds of losses. For example, if your car is damaged in an accident, the value of your car has been reduced, and whether you pay to have your car repaired or sell it for scrap, you have suffered a financial loss resulting from the accident.”

If I insure my radio for R3 000 is will you pay out this amount if it’s stolen?

Any item specified on your insurance policy needs be covered for the replacement value. If the item is stolen the insurer will obtain replacement quotes in accordance with the items specifications (make and model). The insurer will then pay the replacement or insured value (whichever is less), less any applicable excess. Please note that the insurer reserves the right to replace or pay cash in lieu.

I am currently insured with MiWay and would like to know whether my 2006 Kia Rio 1400 will still be covered if I only have central locking in my car? Is it compulsory to have a gear lock or immobiliser?

The security requirements for your car are dependent on a variety of factors. These may be whether your installed device is approved or not, the area or situation where the car is parked or the whether you have a tracking device installed or not. Please contact our call centre – one of our agent’s will happily explain the situation.

If I don’t pay my insurance premiums for one month, does MiWay cancel my policy, or will I have to pay double premiums the following month?

Missing your premium for one month will not result in automatic cancellation of your insurance cover BUT serial non-payment of premiums may result in a cancellation. We don’t double debit clients the following month – you just won’t be covered for the month that you missed your premium.

I was involved in an accident over the weekend. I have insurance but didn’t pay the premium this month. I was hit from behind and it wasn’t my fault. The damage is minor but how do I go about claiming for the damage from the guilty party who has insurance?

Although you did not pay your premium, your current car insurance company will probably advise you on how to go about claiming from the guilty party. We suggest that you contact your insurer’s claims department to request assistance.

I am going to Botswana for the weekend. Is my car covered in the case of a claim?

Yes, your car is covered while you are in Botswana but only if it is used for private use. Please also note that you’re only covered for damage to your own vehicle and not the other parties’ vehicle.

I bought a car from a dealership and they did not provide me with spare keys, they don’t have spares. Will this affect a claim in the event of the car being stolen?

Having a single key as you described will not affect the outcome of a car insurance theft claim. However, we suggest that you have a spare key made, for obvious reasons.

If I was involved in accident where I happened to be the faulty party, is it true that MiWay might not accept my claim? Also, if MiWay settles my claim will you increase my premiums going forward because of the claim and will I lose points, every time I claim?

The circumstances surrounding a claim and specifically around a claim that is repudiated are totally dependent on the incident that resulted in the claim. Unfortunately your premiums will probably increase if you were responsible for the accident.

My question is related to the accident-free period. Do you have to include accidents that are totally not your fault; for example if a guy hits you from behind whilst being stationary at a red traffic light in HIGHLY visible conditions. If yes, is this a fair practise to penalise you in terms of your risk profile. How does the accident-free period affect ones risk profile and do you take a driver’s full driving history into account or only the accident-free period?

Different car insurance companies have different policies in terms of accident-free periods. Some insurers apportion blame on a case-by-case basis as it’s normally difficult to generalise when trying to determine who is to blame for an accident. We suggest that you discuss the merits of your situation with your insurer.

I was in an accident and the other party was at fault. Once the assessment was done MiWay told me that they would not repair the vehicle as it ‘is not economical to repair’. What does this actually mean? And does that mean I get nothing at all?

The purpose of the assessment is to establish the repair cost of the vehicle. When the repair costs exceeds 70% of the value of the vehicle then it is no longer viable for us to repair the vehicle and we then deem the vehicle to be uneconomical to repair.

Do you cover cars that are not registered in South Africa?

Unfortunately we only offer comprehensive cover for cars registered in South Africa, in other words, we do not offer accident, fire or theft cover for vehicles not registered in South Africa. However, you are able to insure vehicles not registered in South Africa for third party liability cover, giving you peace of mind in the unfortunate event of you being the guilty party in an accident.

I might be selling my car, which I insured with MiWay in January 2009, can I cancel the policy and what are the pros and cons of doing this?

Does MiWay pay the claim if the accident was my fault?

As long as you abided by the terms of your policy, yes, MiWay will pay the claim even if it was your fault. However, if you are driving negligently (too fast, erratically etc.) or driving under the influence of alcohol or some other substance, then MiWay would have grounds to repudiate your claim.

MiWay's comprehensive cover includes free roadside emergency assistance, so yes, we would help you to get your vehicle started.

My standard vehicle has a theoretical top speed of 208km/h – as per technical specifications. The tyres are however specified as a ‘W’ speed rating i.e. 270 km/h. I want to replace all of the tyres with a softer compound to reduce noise levels, but can only get a ‘V’ rated (240 km/h) tyre in the alternate brand. Will my vehicle still be fully insured in the event of a MVA with ‘V-rated’ tyres?

The simple and short answer is ‘yes, you will be covered’. Your top speed is below the replacement tyres rating. The longer answer… As long as the tyres are above the minimum legal limit as per the road traffic act, you will not have any problems in the event of an accident or incident. However we would like to advise you that should you have an MVA at excessive speeds, your claim may be rejected on due care, irrelevant of the rating or make of the tyres.

My car is not insured with MiWay and I am interested in the Maintenance Plan MiWay offers? Can I get a quote on this?

Will MiWay pay out a claim in the event of an accident caused by being drunk as regular driver?

A claim will definitely be repudiated if the driver is driving under the influence of alcohol when the accident occurred. A car insurance claim will not be settled if there is proof that the driver has been drunk.A car insurance policy holder should be aware that he is obliged under the car insurance policy to operate the vehicle within the Rules of the Road. If he does not obey the Rules of the Road, he will be in breach of his part of the agreement under the car insurance policy and cannot expect the insurer to settle the claim.Unfortunately we do not have enough testing for drunken driving and most accidents that are not serious do not result in testing for breath and blood. Too many accident claims are made “the morning after” and will never involve disclosure of whether the driver had a few drinks.

Will MiWay cover me if my car was involved in a hit and run accident? For example, if my car was parked and, on my return to it, I noticed it was dented – What is the procedure?

Yes, MiWay would process your claim in the unfortunate event of a hit and run accident. Please contact our claims department to lodge a claim.

Is it true that with MiWay you pay extra on the excess if you are only with them for less than three months and if an accident or theft happens over the weekend and after hours?

Currently (as of September 2010), the additional excess is applicable if the claim occurs within 3 months of the inception date of the policy. An additional excess over weekends does apply depending on who was driving the car. If the regular driver (as noted on the policy coversheet) is driving, no additional excess will apply.

Can I get motor warranty included on my insurance premium? If so, how does it work?

Yes, MiWay can provide Motor Warranty in addition to your car insurance cover. Motor Warranty is a separate product to car insurance so will be noted as such on your policy. Please contact our call centre to complete a quote.

If my car is broken into and CDs, DVDs, sunglasses and reading glasses, my Garmen Nuvi and DVD headrests are stolen, does MiWay insurance cover these items? If yes, what is the excess amount over and above the claim?

Depending on the cover you have you may or may not have cover for the items mentioned. Items that are factory fitted in the vehicle are covered as part of the vehicle under that specific section of the policy and the applicable vehicle excess will be applicable. In the case of non-standard items they need to be specified on the vehicle section for there to be cover. In order for other items such as sunglasses, CDs, Garmin etc. to be covered, you need to have either specified or unspecified cover (depending on the value) for there to be cover away from the house. It is also important to note that there are certain policy conditions that are applicable to a loss out of a vehicle, for instance that the items must be concealed in either the cubby hole of boot area of the vehicle and not left out in the open, and that there need to be visible signs of forced entry into the vehicle itself. If you have had an incident kindly contact us so that we can assist you further with the claim.

If my vehicle is written off in an accident, would MiWay’s comprehensive cover pay out an amount for the deposit of a new car? If so, how does this benefit play out in my premiums?

MiWay's comprehensive car insurance cover does not pay out a deposit for a new car. You would need to add our MiValue Protector Product as optional insurance cover. You will be paid whichever is the lesser of: • 10% of the market value of my vehicle; or • 10% of my insured value; or • The difference between the market value of my vehicle and the new list price as at the date of lossYou vehicle must: • Be uneconomical to repair • Have been stolen or hijacked an not recovered

Is the premium higher on a brand new car than on a used car?

A multitude of factors are used to calculate a car insurance premium – the value of a car and the cost of repairing a car are two important factors, which can be affected by the age of a car. Whether a car is used or not has no bearing on the premium calculation. What is likely is that a brand new car will be worth more than a used car (assuming the same make and model), which will therefore result in the brand new car having a higher premium, based on the value of the car.

If a motor vehicle is written off in an accident, and insured at the market value of R110 000, what rand amount/percentage will MiWay pay out?

Your Coversheet reflects the insured value of the vehicle, which is the maximum amount MiWay will pay for any car insurance claim, less the excess and/or dual insurance, betterment or depreciation. If your vehicle is written off, MiWay will pay the insured value, including the value of any specified non-standard factory fitted accessories, according to the values determined in ‘The Auto Dealers Guide’.‘The Auto Dealers Guide’ – applicable to the specific period of loss (incident date month of claim) – determines the insured value of the vehicle and its accessories. This guide takes the age, mileage and condition of the vehicle into account.Should the insured vehicle be insured for the market value, MiWay will pay the market value as determined by ‘The Auto Dealers Guide’ for the incident date period, less any excess (including any additional excess that may apply), depreciation or betterment.

If I join MiWay and I get hail damage after I join, what is my excess? I say this because my last insurer charged me R1500 excess as a result of a hail damage claim.

All insurance policies have an excess component. The excess is an agreed amount of money that you the client is liable to pay in the event of a car insurance claim being settled. A client may choose to discount their premium by choosing the higher excess.

What happens if my car missed a scheduled manufacturers service by 3000 km’s and I am involved in an accident? Am I covered under my comprehensive insurance?

The MiWay policy specifically makes mention that a vehicle must meet the roadworthy requirements as stated by the road traffic legislation. Should your vehicle exceed the mileage required as per the service interval requirements by the manufacturers, this may have an influence on the warranty in place with the specific manufacturer on the vehicle and will not have any relevance to incident and/or claim unless a road worthy requirement was not met. The accident damages to the vehicle will be assessed and may be claimed for under the comprehensive motor policy.

Do you insure imported cars registered in South Africa?

Yes, we do insure imported cars registered in South Africa? If the car is not found in the Transunion Auto Dealers Guide it will need to be insured at a specially agreed value.

Does MiWay have Top Up option included in its vehicle insurance offering?

MiWay does offer Top Up cover but it is not included in comprehensive vehicle insurance, you will need to add it as an optional extra.

Under car insurance, does MiWay have the option for car hire and an excess waiver?

MiWay does give you an option to include car hire on your car insurance cover and we do have a flexible excess structure. At this stage however we only allow you to reduce your premium by increasing your excess. Please note that we do not allow you to increase your premium to decrease your excess but an excess waiver product is currently under consideration.

My car incurred minor damages as a result of a bumper bashing, the woman who bumped into my car told me get 3 quotes from different panel beaters. Why does she want this? And, more importantly, why do I have to drive around wasting time and petrol to sort this out? She was at fault and if she chooses a panel beater how am I going to get to work while my car is being repaired? Can my insurance intervene?

If you have current car insurance cover it is probably easier for you to simply claim from your car insurance company. You will however need to pay an excess when submitting the claim. It is inconvenient, frustrating and a waste of time to drive around getting quotes to have your car repaired, which is one of the reasons to have car insurance cover.

What happens if I pay the excess and I am not at fault? Do I get the money paid for excess back or must I just accept that I’ve lost the money?

Unfortunately, even if an accident is not your fault an excess is payable whenever a claim is submitted. The excess covers the administrative cost of a car insurance claim. Assuming you are not at fault, you can claim the excess amount back from the guilty party. This can unfortunately take a long time, especially if the guilty party isn’t insured. There are certain circumstances when the excess cannot be recovered, for example: • The merits of the claim do not justify the recovery of the excess • You the insured does not have the guilty parties details or the guilty party cannot be traced • The guilty party does not have any income or assets to attach • The legal costs outweigh the recovery costs (excess amount)

Each car insurance policy and premium is determined on specific criteria, which is unique to each individual looking for insurance cover. These criteria include the profile of the regular driver and the use of the vehicle. The use of the vehicle alone can differ as the car may be used for personal, business or professional use. Other criteria may be how far the car is driven every day or where it is kept during the day.

What type of security do I need to install in my car? Would just an immobiliser be fine?

The security requirement for a vehicle depends on the make, model and value of the vehicle. Standard factory fitted security features like immobilisers are often all that is required. Please complete an online insurance quote or request a call back from a sales advisor to see which security requirements your vehicle may need.

What is the additional excess if the vehicle is stolen with a tracking device versus being stolen without a tracking device?

A tracking device is a requirement on your car insurance policy dependant on numerous factors mostly related to the make, model and value of your vehicle. Whether or not you have a tracking device in your vehicle does not affect the excess you would need to pay in the unfortunate event of having an accident or your car being stolen.

Two questions… 1) If my car was a write off can it be insured again? And 2) If my car is a write off do I still pay an excess fee?

1) A car that is written off cannot normally be insured again. Some cars are however rebuilt and MiWay will insure them as long as they are roadworthy. 2) The excess is the first amount payable for any claim, so yes, you would still need to pay the excess.

I need to claim. Where do I start?

The easiest way to lodge your car insurance claim would be to contact our claims call centre. Request a call back from our claims advisors or to find the number for our claims department.

What is the number to call when someone is involved in an accident and needs a towing service?

Can I insure a rebuilt car?

Yes. MiWay's Car Insurance cover does cover passenger vehicles (not exceeding 3500kg) that are registered in South Africa and are in a roadworthy condition. Please note however that MiWay will only pay out 70% of the market value in the event of the car been written off or stolen and not recovered ie. total loss of the vehicle.

What is the minimum period, for which I need to have held a valid drivers license, before MiWay will insure my vehicle?

Quite simply, there’s no minimum period for a drivers license when taking out a car insurance policy but you must have one – If you are the regular driver on your car insurance policy it is required that you have a valid driver's license. In terms of our car insurance policy, in order for you to have a valid claim, the person driving the vehicle must have a valid drivers license, this could also include a valid learners license. In the case of a learners license, a claim will only be valid if the person is accompanied by a person with a valid drivers license and the regular driver on the policy must have a valid drivers license.

My car was involved in a hijacking and was then recovered, but was found with damages due to it being involved in an accident. Do I have the option of requesting that I be paid out for the vehicle – because generally one does not want to drive the same vehicle after a traumatic hijacking – or does MiWay have the final say as to what happens to the vehicle?

Your insurer will determine what is the most economically viable way to place you back in the same position you were in, before you suffered the loss you are claiming for. If it is more economical to repair the vehicle you car insurance company will opt to repair the car rather than replace it.The basic principle of insurance is that an insurer should place you back in the same position you were in, before you suffered the loss you are claiming for. The idea behind a car insurance cover is to financially prepare you for a possible future loss.
