Additional Car Insurance Considerations

South Africa has a strong, accountable insurance industry, and most insurers have a good reputation, are reliable, and are focused on delivering good customer service. When it comes to choosing the right insurer, take a look at how quickly they process claims, what their customer satisfaction ratings are like on Hellopeter, and make sure the company is financial stable and not a fly-by-night.

We recommend comprehensive car insurance, as it typically provides the broadest kind of cover for your car.

Broadform Liability Insurance

This kind of insurance protects your business against claims made by another party who was injured on your premises or whose property was damaged by your business – it covers compensation for third parties for personal injury or property damage.

All business owners should take out this type of cover, because accidents can happen anywhere and at any time during the course of conducting business operations.

No, but it does give you an extra layer of protection – and peace of mind!

Building Insurance

The better question is ‘why not’? With our comprehensive home insurance cover – including protection against theft, fire, natural disasters and more - we also give you free 24/7 home assistance, a quick claims process, and flexible add-ons so you can do things your way.

Our home insurance protects the physical structure of your home - including permanent fixtures and fittings - against a wide range of incidents, from theft to fire and natural disasters. You can customize your cover with add-ons like cover for your guests’ belongings, your garden furniture and even groceries stolen from your car. And you get free 24/7 help with home emergencies included in your cover. Here’s a quick look at what’s covered:

o   Theft and burglary

o   Earthquake, wind, hail, flood and snow

o   Fire and explosion

o   Damage from burst / leaking geyser

o   Damage from landslip / ground movement

o   Accidental damage to glass and sanitaryware

o   R5 000 000 liability to other parties

o   Mihelp free home & medical assistance

o   Extended theft cover (optional add-on)

o   Lightning and power surges (optional add-on)

Think of insurance not in terms of what you paid for your home, but what it would cost to rebuild it from scratch today, including materials, labour, and even the expenses for clearing the site before rebuilding. This includes the bricks and mortar of your house, as well as any outbuildings, extras like your garage, permanent fixtures and special features like swimming pools. And don't forget, you'll need to cover the cost of clearing the site and any council fees, which could add another 20-30% to your rebuild costs.

Yup. Look at it this way: home contents insurance covers all your belongings, so if you were to flip your house upside down, everything that falls will be covered under home contents insurance. Building insurance on the other hand covers the physical structure of your home and its fixtures.

Absolutely! If you made some changes to your place, you’ll need to update your insurance policy to reflect the increased value of your home. Renovations can bump up your home's value, so you might need extra cover. Making sure your insurance matches your home's real value is super important so you stay fully protected.

Yes, absolutely! Please make sure that you update your building sum insured to include both the replacement and installation costs of solar.

Yup, it does! If a pipe decides to go rogue and turns your kitchen into a swimming pool, our building insurance has got your back. It covers damage caused by leaks, including the havoc they wreak on your floors and walls. However, it’s always important to check the specifics of what’s covered on your policy.

Personal liability cover protects you if someone sues you for injuries or damages that happen to them while they’re on your property.

Burst pipe at 1 am? No worries, we’ll organise a plumber right away and cover any damages. Simply give us a call on 0860606764 or via WhatsApp or on the Miway App.

Your appliances are only covered for lightning and power surges under building insurance.

There’s a standard excess on all building claims of R2 200, but additional excesses may apply so please make sure you check your excesses on your coversheet.

Yup! As long as the information you shared with us is accurate, your quote will be too. Of course, while your quote is final, you can always add on Miway Extras or change your policy at any time through the Miway App or our Self-service portal.  But the premium we quote you is exactly what you’ll pay, no hidden fees or surprises.

Yes, homeowners insurance and building insurance are exactly the same thing. With Miway you can also add home contents cover for items like your TV, furniture, and personal belongings.

Yes, you can! Switching to us is easy, even if your house is financed. Just share your current insurer details and your financing info with us. We'll handle the rest and make sure the transition is smooth, without you paying double premiums during the switch.

Yes, you can! You're all set with Miway’s building insurance for long-term rental situations, whether it's a room in your house or a cottage on your property. Just a heads-up, though: our policy doesn't cover short-term rentals like Airbnb or if you're renting out your property for commercial use.

Yup! We’ve got your back for water damage caused by things like your geyser overflowing or bursting, and affecting your permanent fixtures.

Wear and tear is the general deterioration of your property over time due to exposure to weather conditions or a sudden once-off event, like a flood, for example. If the wear and tear is due to poor construction or a lack of maintenance and upkeep, the damage won’t be covered.

You can submit a claim through the Miway App at any time, or you can call our customer support during office hours on 0860646464 so a friendly agent can talk you through the process.

Your excess is what you’ll need to pay out of your own pocket in a lump sum payment when your claim is approved. You may have additional excesses on your policy coversheet, depending on what you signed up for. So always check your policy details to make sure what’s needed when you claim.

We’d hate to see you go, but you can cancel your Miway cover at any time. Just give us a call on 0860646464 to get it sorted. Cancellation is instant, and if there’s refund due, we’ll sort that out immediately too. And tell us why you’re leaving here.

Business all risk insurance

This kind of insurance covers business items that you or your employee carry around with you every day. There are basically two types – unspecified, which covers items that change daily, and then specified, which you take off your premises on a regular basis.

We cover all portable items and equipment that leave your office.

Yes, it is. Whether you invested in your assets recently or a while ago, they still add value to your business and need protecting.

Business interruption insurance

This kind of insurance covers the loss of business income if your business suffers a disaster.

We cover unexpected events like fires, explosions, and electrical faults. We also cover storm damage and flooding, power surges and lightning, theft and vandalism, and equipment breakdown – the major risks that prevent your business from operating.

Sadly, no. It’s optional, so you need to add it to your policy.

Business vehicles and fleet insurance

Business vehicle and fleet insurance is best for any business, big or small, that’s on the move. That includes trucking companies, courier companies, and any other company that owns and uses multiple vehicles.

We offer cover for a wide range of vehicles, from cars to trucks, buses, bakkies, and vans.

Of course! You can make changes to your coversheet at any time, via our Self-service portal, the Miway App, our email address or our call centre [Insert direct links here: email / call centre].

It’s simple - just call in once a year on the anniversary of your insurance policy (your policy start date each year). We’ll help you find ways to bring down your insurance costs without compromising your business cover.

Yes, of course – we like to reward great driving practises. If you’ve had uninterrupted insurance for over 6 months, if you have experienced regular drivers with a long licence history, and if you’ve been claim-free for more than 3 years, your premium is likely to be lower.

Car insurance

The better question is ‘why not’? With our comprehensive car insurance cover - including accident damage, theft, and natural disasters - we also give you free 24/7 roadside assistance, six free rides home in your own car after a night on the town, a quick claims process, and flexible add-ons and extras so you can do things your way.

Our car insurance covers a wide range of incidents, from accidents and theft to fire, natural disasters and more. You can customize your cover with add-ons like window and glass cover or credit shortfall, and you get free 24/7 help with roadside emergencies included in your cover. Here’s a quick look at what’s covered:

o   Accident and intentional damage

o   Theft and hijack

o   Fire and explosion

o   Free emergency alert (Only via the app)

o   Earthquake, storm, hail, flood and snow

o   Window / glass cover

o   Replacement of locks & keys (On valid claims only)

o   Towing and storage costs (Reasonable)

o   Wedrive (Take-me-home service x 6 each year)

o   Mihelp 24/7 roadside help

o   Liability to other parties

The cost of your car insurance depends on a bunch of ‘risk’ factors, like your age, your driving experience, your car’s make and model, and its location in the day and at night. Together, these factors will help us set your monthly car premium.

Miway offers three main car insurance options to choose from, depending on what you need and what you can afford. These are: Comprehensive, Lite, and Total Loss.

We set your excess at a standard R5 000 because we want to make sure you can afford this out of
pocket expense when you make a claim. However, we give you the freedom to dial your excess up or down.  Just remember, the lower your excess, the higher your monthly premium payment, and vice versa. Whatever you decide to set your excess at, just make sure you can afford it as a single lump sum payment when you claim.

We do and it’s a great add-on to your policy, as it covers the gap (shortfall) between the money you still owe on your car, and the amount your insurer will pay out if your car is written off or stolen.

Basically, we’ve created different types of cover to match your budget and your needs. Comprehensive cover gives you all the bells and whistles but will cost more than Miway Lite, for example. You can click here for a complete overview of all our cover options.

Yup! As long as the information you shared with us is accurate, your quote will be too. Of course, while your quote is final, you can always add on Miway Extras or change your policy at any time through the Miway App or our Self-service portal.  But the premium we quote you is exactly what you’ll pay, no hidden fees or surprises.

We make it so easy for you to claim. You can do it anytime via our Self-service portal or on the Miway App – you’ll be able to upload all your pics and docs there. Or you can chat to one of our Claims agents on 0860646464 during office hours. They’ll take you through the entire process from end to end.

Your excess is what you’ll need to pay out of your own pocket in a lump sum payment when your claim is approved. You may have additional excesses on your policy coversheet, depending on what you signed up for. So always check your policy details to make sure what’s needed when you claim.

Nope, you do not need to be the regular driver to insure your car with Miway, but you do need to add the regular driver’s details to your policy.

Yes, you will be if they have a valid driver’s licence and your permission to drive your car. Please check your policy or call our Client services agents, though, as additional excesses may apply.

It’s a great way to keep your car safe, and those tracker teams really do all they can to get your car back to you. But, just as importantly, because car theft is such an everyday event in South Africa, you’ll need an approved tracking device in place in order to get car insurance.

It all depends on the value you insured your car at. Because we want you to be able to do things your way, we give a choice of insured values:

o   Retail value: the price you’d pay to buy the same car from a dealership (this is the highest value you can insure your car at)

o   Trade value: the amount a dealer would give you if you traded in your car (lowest value)

o   Market value: The average selling price of similar cars in your area (middle value)

If you're in an accident, we'll be there to help you every step of the way. Just follow these steps to make sure your claim is processed quickly and smoothly:

o   Incident details: The first step is to note what happened, where it happened, and give a short description of the accident

o   Scene photos: Take as many photos as you can at the scene and around it. Include all pics of licence discs and driver’s licences, along with pics of the damage to your car and to the other car/s involved in the accident. Photos are an important part of your claim and provide proof of the accident

o   Witness details: If there were witnesses to the accident, remember to get their details so they can give statements. This not only includes bystanders, police officers, ambulance drivers, Metro Police / traffic officials, etc. that may also have been on the scene

o   Other party details: If the accident involved another person, you’ll need their details when you register a case at a police station, and when you claim. Try to get as much detail as possible from other parties involved

There are a whole bunch of factors that impact your premium - how old you are, how long you've been driving, what type of car you drive, etc.

We’d hate to see you go, but yes, you can cancel your Miway cover at any time. Just give us a call on 0860646464 to get it sorted. And tell us why you’re leaving here.

To get car insurance, you first need to have your car inspected so we know what condition it’s in. We make it easy for you to do this – you can do a self-inspection on the Miway App in your own driveway, so you don’t need to drive out to one of our inspection centres.

Car Insurance Coverage and Costs

Comprehensive insurance is the best choice for most drivers as it offers the most widest cover.

Comprehensive car insurance typically covers the most, as it includes damage to your own car, third-party liability, and protection against theft, hijack, fire, and natural disasters, like hail and snow.

Generally, the colour of a car doesn't significantly impact the insurance premium you’ll pay. But lighter, easier to see cars will have slightly lower premiums.

Third-party insurance is the most basic form of car insurance, as it only covers damage caused by your car to other vehicles or property.

Younger drivers, especially those under 25, are likely to pay higher premiums because they’re less experienced and therefore an increased risk. Drivers with a poor driving track record or a history of multiple claims may also pay higher premiums.

Car insurance is typically most expensive for younger drivers, especially those under 25. Youth, sadly, is not on your side in this case.

Caravan Insurance

The better question is ‘why not’? With our comprehensive caravan insurance cover - including accident damage, theft, and natural disasters - we also give you free 24/7 roadside assistance, a quick claims process, and flexible add-ons so you can do things your way.

Our caravan insurance covers a wide range of incidents, from accidents and theft to fire and natural disasters. You can customize your cover with add-ons like accessories and contents, and you get free 24/7 help with roadside emergencies included in your cover. Here’s a quick look at what’s covered:

o   Accident and intentional damage

o   Theft and hijack

o   Earthquake, storm, hail, flood and snow

o   Fire and explosion

o   Liability (R750 000 liability to others)

o   Loss of keys

The cost of your caravan insurance depends on a bunch of factors, like the type of caravan you own, where it’s stored by day and at night, and what it’s worth.

Yup. Accessories are seen as permanent fixtures to the caravan – in other words, items that were not factory-fitted but installed in/outside the caravan afterwards. You’ll need to list the the replacement value for both the caravan’s contents and accessories as extras. The value of the caravan's contents must be specified under the ‘Specified Accessories’ risk.

There’s a standard excess set at 10% of the amount you claim for, with a minimum excess of R2 000. But there might also be additional excesses on your policy, so please always check your policy coversheet.

We’ve made it easy for you to get a quote, the way you want it. Just request the callback on our website or via the Miway App and one of our friendly agents will reach out to you to help you complete your quote. Or you can give us a call on 0860646464.

You can choose to submit your claim on the Miway App or via our customer support on 0860646464.

Your excess is what you’ll need to pay out of your own pocket in a lump sum payment when your claim is approved. You may have additional excesses on your policy coversheet, depending on what you signed up for. So always check your policy details to make sure what’s needed when you claim.

Yup, you do. You’ll need either Miway car, motorcycle, home contents or building insurance to qualify for trailer insurance.

You can insure it for any value, but the maximum cover on caravan insurance is R300 000.

If you're in an accident, we'll be there to help you every step of the way. Just follow these steps to make sure your claim is processed quickly and smoothly:

o   Incident details: The first step is to note what happened, where it happened, and give a short description of the accident

Claims

We’ve made it easy for you to claim. You can submit your claims via the Miway App or website. For typical claims, the app will guide you through a simple process where you will be asked a few questions before logging your claim. There are certain types of claims which will be approved immediately, while others may need a call-back to get more details from you before we let you know whether your claim is approved or not.

An excess is the money you need to pay upfront out of your own pocket when you claim. For example, if you have an approved claim of R50 000 and your excess is R5 000, you’ll pay the first R5000 and we’ll pay R45 000 – in other words, the leftover amount.

An additional excess is what you’ll need to pay on top of your standard excess. Your additional excesses will be noted on your coversheet.

A claim may be rejected for a number of reasons, including if the regular driver on the policy changed. We’ll make sure to clearly explain the reasons behind the outcome of your claim so that you fully understand the decision.

Miway gives you the option of a cash payout, or replacement or repairs via a Miway-approved supplier - or a combination of any of these.

Miway has the right to cancel your cover if you claim too frequently. This is because you become too great a risk. But before we take any decision to cancel your contract, we’ll first share tips with you on how you can improve your risk profile.

There could be a bunch of reasons for this, but one of the main reasons is if you don’t provide us with full and accurate details about your claim. Being honest and transparent when you first set up your insurance policy and when you provide info for a claim are vital. ‘Non-disclosure’ or withholding info or being deceptive (along with some other issues) could result in your insurance contract being cancelled or you losing a claim. Just remember, though, that we don’t take the decision to cancel an insurance policy lightly, but at times it may be necessary.

We really want to settle  your claim as quickly as possible, because we know the inconvenience and distress a loss can cause. But there may be cases where we’ll need to wait for further details and verification before we can approve the claim, and there may be property damage claims or liability claims that take longer to settle.

At Miway, we will always set a fair and reasonable value, based on reputable independent sources. We take into account the age, mileage and condition of your car. If your car is either stolen, written-off or too costly to repair, you we’ll pay out your car’s insured value, based on the fair and reasonable value of the car at the time of loss.

There’s a lot you can do. If you feel it’s unfair, you can escalate the issue with our resolution team by logging a formal complaint with our Complaints department. If the issue is not sorted out, you can escalate the matter to the Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance. The OSTI is an independent body that resolves disputes between insurers and clients. They’ll provide a free service to you and have the power to overturn unfair claim rejections.

Customer feedback

For one thing, we care about our clients. We see them as people, not policies, so we’ll do all we can to make sure you have an amazing experience and get the best service from us, each and every time you reach out to us. But we have a bunch of other benefits on top of that:

1. Do it all online  – At the tap of a button, you can take out a policy, submit a claim or chat to an agent.

2. Emergency alert – If you’re in an accident, the Miway Emergency alert app feature alerts us immediately so we can send out emergency services to your location.

3. 24/7 Roadside/home assistance – We offers you free emergency help at home or on the road when you need it, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

DebiCheck

DebiCheck allows you to confirm your debit order with your bank. You need to do this as part of your Miway policy conditions.  It’s a once-off process done via the Miway App.

It gives you greater control of the debit orders being processed by your bank. It lets us know that you are aware of your debit order with us.   And it allows your bank to capture and check your debit order details before they process the debit order.

It’s simple!

o   Log into the Miway App

o   After landing on the offers page, activate the process, provide your salary date, and submit

o   After submission, you need to accept the DebiCheck mandate via your banking app and then you’re done!

Absolutely! The system was designed by banks based on best practice. Just make sure your contact details are up to date with your bank, as they use these to confirm your debit orders.

DebiCheck does not cost anything. In fact, you’ll get a reward from us for activating it.

Debit orders automatically take your monthly premium out of your bank account on a date that you choose. This helps you make sure that your payments are on time so you keep your cover.

If your debit order fails because you don’t have enough funds in your bank account, we’ll try to draw your premium again after a few days. We’ll also let you know that your debit order didn’t go through. It’s important to always make sure there are enough funds in your account.

Yes, you can contact us to ask us to try again. But just remember that multiple failed attempts may impact your policy status or lead to additional fees.

You can update your banking details by signing into the app or Self-service portal, or by contacting our customer service team on 0860646464. Just make sure you update your details well before your next payment is due.

Changes to your banking details typically take about 1–2 business days to come through. To avoid any payment issues, just sure the update is completed before your next debit order date.

DebiCheck allows you to confirm your debit order with your bank. You need to do this as part of your Miway policy conditions.  It’s a once-off process done via the Miway App, and allows you to approve any changes to your premiums. It also signals to us that you are committed to paying your premiums.

You’ll get a notification from your bank via SMS or your banking app to confirm the debit order. Just follow the prompts to approve your DebiCheck request, so that your insurance payments are approved.

Yes, you can change your debit order date at any time. Just reach out to our customer service team to set  a date that works for you. Hint: set it up just after your salary payment.

No, updating your banking details does not impact your premium at all. Your premium is based on the type of insurance cover you have, not your bank account info.

If you notice that an incorrect amount has been taken out of your account, reach out to us asap to sort it out.

E-Hailing insurance

This is comprehensive cover for all app-based taxi businesses, like Uber, Bolt, etc. [Do we want to add smaller regional businesses like inDrive, Zebra Cabs, Shesha, BozaRide, YoTaxi, etc.?]

Any person who’s registered on the app platform qualifies, as long as they have a valid driver’s licence and PDP (Professional Driving Permit) issued by the Department of Transport.

You can apply with all your personal details, licence details and a full description of your vehicle. [Can they upload pics of their vehicle/s via the app?]

Of course, you can! We support entrepreneurs and people who are hustling hard to make ends meet.

Environmental Liability Insurance

This kind of insurance covers you if you’re transporting dangerous or hazardous goods. It includes clean-up costs, environmental rehabilitation, disposal of environmental waste and spillages due to loading and off-loading activities.

It’s perfect for transporters of hazardous goods and potential pollutants.

Sadly, no. This insurance only covers businesses that transport hazardous goods and dangerous materials.

Absolutely! Our expert claims team will handle the complexities that come with these types of incidents and guide you through the compliance and reporting processes required by legislation.

No, it only covers the transport of hazardous substances and toxic waste

FAQs: Micashback

Yes, we do! First, we have our Micashback bonus, where you get 10% of your premiums back in cash every 2 years for being claim-free. Plus, we reward you for referring your friends and family to Miway for a quote.

Yes, you get a Micashback™ bonus every 2 years if you stay claim-free and pay all your premiums on time so there’s no break in your cover. Just remember that not all our products qualify for the Micashback™ bonus. And certain claims, like windscreen chip repairs and Mihelp services, won’t impact your Micashback™ bonus.

These products qualify for a Micashback™ bonus:

Car insurance (Miwheels)

Home insurance (Miplace)

Home contents insurance (Mistuff)

Moveables insurance (Mimoveables)

Bicycle insurance (Mibicycle)

Motorcycle insurance (Mibike)

Trailer insurance (Mitrailer)

Caravan insurance (Micaravan)

If you’re a Miway policyholder with at least one qualifying product, you get 10% of your premiums back every 2 years, if you stay claim-free with no break in your cover.  The bonus cycle starts automatically from the start date of your policy (you’ll find this information in your coversheet) and lasts for two years after your first full premium payment. A new 2-year bonus cycle kicks in automatically after each bonus payout.

You can find it on the Miway App or in your latest policy schedule. You’ll also be able to see what portion of your premium qualifies for Micashback™ and determines your Micashback™ bonus payout.

Your Micashback™ bonus will be paid into the same bank account that your premiums are paid from. The payment will be made 30 days after the end of the 2-year Micashback™ cycle.

Sadly, you’d lose your Micashback™ bonus entirely. The bonus depends on you completing the 2-year Micashback™ cycle to its end.

Reach out to us as soon as possible and we’ll resubmit your debit order for the full premium. You have a 15-day grace period, and if payment is received in that period, your Micashback™ cycle won’t be impacted at all.

However, if the entire premium doesn’t get paid in that grace period, you won’t have cover for that period, and your Micashback™ bonus will be lost. This is because you’ve had a break in your cover.

The good news is that a new 2-year Micashback™ cycle will automatically start on the day that your next month’s premium is paid.

Firstly, not all claims will impact Micashback™. Only claims related to the qualifying products will impact your bonus. Your new 2-year Micashback™ cycle will automatically start on the day after the claim incident date, with payout amount based on your premium.

Using your Mihelp benefits won’t impact your Micashback bonus. But, in some cases, a Mihelp emergency might progress to a claim. If this happens, your Micashback™ bonus will sadly be lost.

Claims for windscreen chips won’t impact your Micashback™ bonus. However, if a windscreen chip can’t be repaired and leads to a windscreen replacement, your Micashback™ bonus will be lost.

Your policy might cover multiple insured items - for example, your house, home contents, a car and a motor warranty. Micashback™ applies to all qualifying products on your policy, so a claim on one qualifying item – your car, for instance - will mean that you lose the Micashback™ bonus for the entire policy.

Your motor warranty (Miwarranty) is not a qualifying Micashback™ product, so a claim on your Miwarranty cover won’t affect your Micashback™ bonus.

It’s simple - if you withdraw your claim before repairs have begun or parts have been ordered, you won’t lose your Micashback™ bonus.

Sadly, no. If you want to keep your bonus, then you can’t claim during this period. You’ll need to wait for the full 2-year cycle to end. But any claim made after the end of the Micashback™ cycle but before your bonus is paid into your account will have no impact at all on your bonus payout.

Once your Micashback™ bonus has been paid, you cannot go back and claim for an incident that happened in that previous Micashback™ cycle.

If the incident date falls within the Micashback™ cycle, your bonus will be lost for any liability claims that are settled or when a letter of demand or summons is referred to us.

Your new cycle will start immediately after the incident date.

Losing your Micashback™ bonus is based on whether there is an approved claim, not on whose fault it is. Any claims approved will sadly lead to you losing your Micashback™ bonus.

Yes! As a Miway policyholder with at least one qualifying product, your Micashback™ bonus cycle will start automatically from your policy start date (you’ll find the date on your policy coversheet), starting from April 2025, when your policy is upgraded to this new offering.

General Car Insurance Questions

The ‘best’ car insurance is the one that’s best for your needs and your budget. When you choose an insurer, you should look at the types of cover they offer, how quick their claims process is, what their customer service is like, and how they price their monthly premiums. Plus, you should see if the insurer offers you any extra value, like a free towing or emergency help.

The cost of your car insurance depends on a bunch of ‘risk’ factors, like your age, your driving experience, the make and model of your car, its location in the day and at night, and the kind of cover you choose. Together, these factors help insurers set your monthly car premium.

Third-party insurance is typically the cheapest kind of car insurance, as it only covers the damage your car causes to other vehicles or property - but it doesn't cover damage to your own car!

Comprehensive car insurance is typically seen as the best option, as it provides the broadest cover, including damage to your own car.

o   Comprehensive car insurance: Covers theft, hijacking, and damage caused by accidents or weather conditions. It also offers cover if you’re responsible for an accident and need to pay for damages to another person’s car, as well as damage to your own car. This is the broadest type of  cover.

o   Third-party, fire and theft cover: Covers the costs if your car is damaged or lost due to theft or fire-related incidents. It also covers damage you may have caused to another person's car during an accident. But if you’re involved in a car accident, you need to cover the repairs or replacement costs of your car on your own.

o   Total loss cover: Covers the total loss of your car, only when your car is ‘written off’ or when your car is stolen and can’t be recovered. It also gives you limited third-party liability cover. But damage from an accident that does not lead to a total loss is not covered.

o   Third party only cover: Covers any damage you may cause to the car or property of another person. But damage or loss to your own car is not covered.

If you’re not sure what cover option is right for you, just give us a call and chat to one of our agents – they’ll help you get the cover that works best for you.

Goods in transit insurance

We cover all kinds of goods, from raw materials to manufactured and traded goods, new, second-hand and fresh goods. In fact, we even cover goods belonging to other parties which are in your possession and which you’re responsible for as the policyholder and business owner.

We offer you Alternative transport cover – this covers the cost of collecting your goods from an accident scene or site.

You can also add Load protection cover to your policy – this protects your goods after an incident with cover for a security guard on site or for the cost of moving them to a safe place or end destination.

Yes, of course, because business shouldn’t have any borders or limits. We cover Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Eswatini and Zimbabwe, as well as extended territories south of and including Lubumbashi, and including the DRC, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

Home contents insurance

The better question is ‘why not’? With our comprehensive home contents insurance cover - including theft, fire, and natural disasters - we also give you free 24/7 home assistance, a quick claims process, and flexible add-ons so you can do things your way.

Our home contents insurance covers a wide range of incidents, from theft to fire and natural disasters. You can customize your cover with add-ons like locks and keys and lightning, and you get free 24/7 help with home emergencies included in your cover. Here’s a quick look at what’s covered:

o   Theft and burglary

o   Earthquake, wind, hail, flood and snow

o   Fire and explosion

o   Damage from burst / leaking geyser

o   Damage from burst / leaking pipes

o   Damage from landslip / ground movement

o   Damage during transport to new residence

o   R5 000 000 liability to other parties

o   Mihelp free home & medical assistance

o   Extended theft cover (optional add-on)

o   Garden and leisure equipment (optional add-on)

o   Locks and keys (optional add-on)

o   Lightning and power surges (optional add-on)

The cost of your home contents insurance depends on a bunch of ‘risk’ factors, like what your belongings are worth and the level of cover you choose.

As a rule, your home contents (your personal possessions) are everything that would fall down if you turned your house upside down. This does not include items you listed and specified under your Mimovables cover. You should have enough cover for all your valuable household items – you can chat about this with one of our agents.

Yes. Look at it this way, home contents insurance covers all your belongings, so if you were to flip your house upside down, everything that falls will be covered under home contents insurance.

Building insurance on the other hand covers the physical structure of your home and all its fixtures.

Yup, your home electronics are also covered.

Yup. Damages to your stuff as a result of a leak or burst geyser will be covered.

Yes, but you won’t be covered against damages to appliances because of a power surge or dip. This is similar to lightning strike damage (a sudden burst of high voltage electricity is pushed through the electric cables and it could cause damage to appliances). Lightning and power surge is an optional add-on which covers you against this type of damage.

Yes, your mobile phone is covered for accidental damage, theft, or loss, both at home and when you're out and about. However, for your phone to be fully covered, especially for accidental damage and for its full value outside your home, it needs to be specified.

The standard excess is R1 500. Voluntary excess up to a maximum of R5 000 may be chosen. Additional excesses may also apply -  please check your coversheet. The Lightning and power surge standard excess is R4 500 .

Yup! As long as the information you shared with us is accurate, your quote will be too. Of course, while your quote is final, you can always add on Miway Extras or change your policy at any time through the Miway App or our Self-service portal.  But the premium we quote you is exactly what you’ll pay, no hidden fees or surprises.

Yup! Your policy includes ‘damage to my contents being transported’ as part of your standard cover. It only covers damage to contents being transported to a new permanent address caused by an accident involving the car carrying your contents.

Sadly, we don’t cover theft during transportation of your home contents. We also don’t cover accidental damage if the movers drop the furniture or if accidental damage occurs due to anything other than a car accident. The only exception to this will be the accidental breakage of television sets, mirrors or glass that are part of any furniture because these are covered perils

Yes, your stuff will be covered if your geyser bursts and your home contents are damaged as a result.

We’d hate to see you go, but yes, you can cancel your Miway cover at any time. Just give us a call on 0860646464 to get it sorted. And tell us why you’re leaving here.

irefer

The Ts and Cs map out all the rules and guidelines for Miway’s irefer referral programme and incentives. They cover how the programme works, what your responsibility as a referrer is, and what steps you need to follow to redeem your irefer voucher.

This is to protect you as a consumer so you know what your rights and responsibilities are.

Nope! There’s no limit at all to the number of people you can refer. Just make sure you have their consent before you do anything.

irefer allows existing Miway clients to refer their friends or family members for a Miway insurance quote by sharing their name and contact details with Miway. There are rewards for both the existing client (irefer voucher) and the referred person (Micashback bonus after 2 claim-free years).

Referring is easy. You simply share the person’s name and contact number with us via the Miway App. One of our friendly agents will contact your friend or family member. Just follow these simple steps

·       Sign in on the Miway App

·       On the ‘Offers landing page’, follow the prompts to start the process

·       Provide the contact details, name & surname of your friend or family member, then tap ‘Submit’

·       Or click on the irefer button on the app dashboard and follow the same process

·       You can also contact us on 0860 64 64 64 for help with your referral

As an existing Miway client and the referrer, you could earn up to R1000* in the form of a digital voucher

·      If you successfully referred someone for non-life cover like car or home insurance, you’ll get a R300 voucher if the person accepts our quote, and another R700 once the person has paid their first premium in full*

·      If you successfully referred someone for any of our Miway Extras, or if they accept our quote but don’t go on to take out cover, you’ll get a R300 voucher*

On top of this, the person you refer will qualify for our Micashback* bonus, which is paid out every 2 claim-free years if there is no break in cover. And they can also use irefer to refer and earn.

Nope! There is absolutely no limit to the number of people you can refer. But before you refer your contacts, please make sure they’re OK with you sharing their details with us, and they’re happy to take our call - consent is everything!

We’ll send you an SMS to let you know when your voucher is ready. You’ll be able to access your voucher via the 6DOT50 App. If you’re already on the 6DOT50 App, you’ll get an in-app notification. You can find out more about 6DOT50 right here.

Happy - however, if the client already has a 6DOT50 account they won’t get an SMS - they will receive an in-app notification.

As long as the person takes out insurance cover with us via your referral, and pays their first premium, you’ll qualify for a R1000.* If they take out Miway’s Business insurance with us and pay their first premium, you’ll qualify for a R1000 voucher.* If they take out one of Miway’s Extras and pay their first premium, you’ll qualify for a R300 voucher.* If they only accept a quote from us but don’t go on to take out cover with us, you’ll still qualify for a R300 voucher.* But if they take out any Miway policy through another source and not via irefer, you won’t qualify for any vouchers.

You’ll get regular emails from us to update you on the status of your referral. And remember, the more you refer, the more you earn!

Mimoveables

It’s cover for your personal possessions, the ‘stuff’ that belong to you or to any members of your household. These are items that are usually worn or taken out of your home – like your sunnies and cellphone, your wallet and your wristwatch, your camera and computer, etc. You get cover for these items in SA and around the world.

You can cover a wide range of items, like cameras and photographic equipment, cellphones, camping equipment, clothing, portable electronic, collectable items, golf gear, laptops, musical instruments, etc.

No, there’s no limit to the number of items that you can insure.

Yes, but we’ll only cover items that are used for personal and business use under the following conditions:

o   Items are kept at your home address

o   Items are only used by you or other members of your household

Firstly, there are two types of items – specified and unspecified. Unspecified items are those that you don’t carry with you often. Specified items are those that you usually carry on you 24/7. If you’re not sure about the value of an item, just chat to one of our friendly agents. They’ll make sure you’re neither over nor under insured.

Yup, you do! Mimoveables can only be taken out if you have Miway car, motorcycle, bicycle, building or home contents cover (any and only one of these is needed). If Mimoveables is not connected to your home contents, then the specified items must be 24/7 type items like cellphones, wedding rings, wrist watches and laptops.

Yup, you can take your items around the globe and they’ll be covered on trips for up to six months.

Nope, there’s no waiting period before you can claim, but your policy must be active and your premiums all paid.

You are covered for theft, accidental damage and even loss. Just remember, leaving your phone on the roof of your car and driving off might not be covered (negligence is a no-no).

There’s a standard excess of R680 on all claims. But any claim that’s made within 3 months of the start date of your policy will have an additional excess of R2 000, unless:

o   You had uninterrupted All Risk insurance in the 6 months before you joined Miway or

o   If we called or messaged you to offer you cover

Yes, there are 3 cover options (bronze, silver and gold) which offer cover for up to 37 components.

Miwarranty covers the major mechanical components for a wide variety of vehicles. For a detailed breakdown of the components covered, click here (link to the policy wording).

Our trained agents will explain all the cover options to you, based on your vehicle make, mileage and age.

It depends. Sometimes the cost to repair your car may be more than the maximum cover limit. If this happens, you’ll need to cover the balance. But no worries, our agents will guide you through this.

Yup, wear and tear costs up to 100% are covered on the covered components.

If you did not have an active motor warranty policy in place 30 days before the start date of your Miwarranty policy, you’ll need to wait 30 days from the start date of your policy to claim.

Sadly, no. Any faults that were there before you took out Miwarranty will not be covered.

No, but services must be done by a repairer that offers full repair and service facilities. Repairers must be:

Miway App

To get car cover from Miway, you first need to do a self-inspection of your car on the app. You can do all sorts of other cool stuff like:

o   Activate Miway’s Emergency alert

o   Request 24/7 Roadside assistance

o   Book a WeDrive ride (take me home service)

o   Update your policy instantly

o   Submit a claim

o   Chat to our friendly agents

Our Emergency alert feature detects directly from your phone if your car’s been in an accident. We’ll first try to call you to find out if you need help or a towing. If we can’t reach you, we’ll dispatch a 24/7 emergency team right away to your exact location!

This feature automatically comes with Miway’s comprehensive car cover (Miwheels) but you need to activate it on the Miway App and enable all the necessary permissions on your phone for the alert to work.

We need this to locate you in an accident or emergency, and communicate with you. So make sure the permissions we ask for are enabled on your phone – tap ‘Always allow’ in your settings to do this. Please also make sure your battery optimisation is disabled, and you always have e ough data when you head out from home..

Yes, the Emergency alert feature is only for Miway customers.

Just make sure you ‘Always allow’ the Miway App to access the necessary permissions on your phone. When you log into the app, you’ll be prompted to allow access to your location, notifications, nearby devices, Bluetooth, and motion and fitness. Please also make sure that your battery optimisation is disabled, and you never leave home or the office without enough data.

To make sure we’re able to detect an accident directly from your phone, you need to have a phone with certain sensors (these are called an accelerometer and magnetometer).

We’ll be able to detect if your phone is compatible when you log into the Miway App on that phone. If your phone is not compatible, we’ll send you a push notification on first login to let you know. And you’ll also see that the Emergency alert feature is deactivated in the profile menu of the app.

Yup, it automatically comes with Miway’s comprehensive car cover (Miwheels) but you need to activate it on the Miway App and enable all the necessary permissions on your phone for the alert to work.

Unfortunately, you can only access these benefits with a smartphone.

It’s an emergency button on the Miway App that you can tap to trigger a 24/7 emergency response from over 3 000 reaction teams if  you feel threatened, unsafe or are injured. Once you trigger the alert, we will geolocate you and send out a team asap to help.

There’s no limit, but please make sure there are no false alarms. Lives could be at stake and we take the service seriously.

You can update your details during office hours through our call centre, or in your own time via the Self-service portal on our website or the Miway App.

o   Theft and hijack

o   Earthquake, storm, hail, flood and snow

o   Liability (*excludes for quad and off-road bikes)

o   Loss of keys

The cost of your bike insurance depends on a bunch of ‘risk’ factors, like your age, your riding experience, the type of bike you ride, and its location in the day and at night. Together, these factors will help us set your monthly motorbike premium.

Nope. You need to specify each item, whether it’s attached to your bike or non-standard, and list its value so that it’s part of your bike cover.

There’s a standard excess set at 10% of the amount you claim for, with a minimum excess of R3 500. But there might also be additional excesses on your policy, so please always check your policy coversheet.

We do and it’s a great add-on to your policy, as it covers the gap (shortfall) between the money you still owe on your bike, and the amount your insurer will pay out if your bike is written off or stolen.

Yup, we do, but it’s only provided for superbikes, naked superbikes, motards, dual sport and cruisers. We only provide track cover through approved track schools.

Nope, you do not need to be the regular driver to insure your bike with Miway, but you do need to add the regular driver’s details to your policy.

Yes, you will be if they have a valid licence and your permission to drive your car. Please check your policy or call our Client services agents, though, as additional excesses may apply.

If the value of your motorcycle is R180 000 or more, you can only get cover for theft and hijack if you have a Miway-approved tracking device on your bike. It’s also a great way to keep your bike safe, and those tracker teams really do all they can to get your motorbike back to you.

It all depends on the value you insured your bike at. Because we want you to be able to do things your way, we give a choice of insured values:

o   Retail value: the price you’d pay to buy the same bike from a dealership (this is the highest value you can insure your car at)

o   Trade value: the amount a dealer would give you if you traded in your bike (lowest value)

o   Market value: The average selling price of similar bikes in your area (middle value)

Include all pics of licence discs and driver’s licences, along with pics of the damage to your bike and to the other vehicle/s involved in the accident.

There are a whole bunch of factors that impact your premium - how old you are, how long you've been driving, what type of bike you drive, etc.

We’d hate to see you go, but yes, you can cancel your Miway cover at any time. Just give us a call on 0860646464 to get it sorted. And tell us why you’re leaving here.

Policy amendments

You can amend your policy by contacting our customer service team or signing into the Miway App or Self-service portal. You’ll be able to update your personal or banking details, add a change of address, update the regular driver’s details, submit a claim, and more.

Yes, changes to your policy, like updating the regular drive or the address change may impact your premium. We’ll adjust the risk and  premium and let you know what changes have been made.

It’s easy! Just give us a call. It’s important to regularly review your policy to make sure your items and assets are properly valued and current.

Yes, you can increase or lower your excess at any time via the app or our Self-service portal. Just remember, though, that lowering your excess will increase your premium, while raising it will bring your monthly premium down.  Whatever you decide, make sure you set an excess you can actually afford when it comes to paying it out in a single lump sumpayment.

Most changes take effect immediately or within 24 hours of your request.

Yes, you can add another driver to your policy, but your premium may change depending on the driver’s profile. Please also make sure that the ‘regular driver’on your policy is the correct one.

You can still make changes to your policy after putting in a claim, but any changes will apply going forward and won't affect the claim that’s already being processed.

Nope! Just call us during office hours or make changes in your own time via the app or Self-service portal.

Policy cancellation

We’d hate to see you go, but yes, you can cancel your Miway cover at any time. Just give us a call on 0860646464 to get it sorted. And tell us why you’re leaving here.

No, you will not be charged a cancellation fee – you have the right to cancel your policy at any time without penalties.

Yes, you can cancel your Miway insurance policy at any time.

Depending on the day you cancel, you may get a refund based on the unused portion of your premium.

Cancelling your policy will not remove your claim history. Your claims record will remain part of your insurance history and can impact future premiums.

Yes, we give you a 3-month period to reinstate your policy,  but after that, you’ll need to apply for a new policy - one that possibly has different terms and premiums.

Yes, you can cancel your policy even if you’ve made a recent claim, but any outstanding claims will still be processed based on your policy terms and conditions.

Professional liability insurance

It’s insurance that protects professionals and semi-professionals if a third party sues them for missed details or mistakes they may have made while giving this third party advice as part of their job. It helps when clients or others claim that your professional guidance, advice or services directly caused them harm or financial loss.

Any trained, qualified professional who uses their skills and knowledge in their field (e.g., an accountant).

It protects your business against claims based on any errors or negligence on your part, so there’s no financial fallout when you face a claim.

Yes, you can – for example, if you’re a certified  accountant or estate agent.

Basically, professional liability covers errors you may make when you give professional advice or guidance, while general liability covers physical accidents and damages that happen toa third party on your business premises.

Your premises, office contents, electronic and specialised equipment, and stock are all covered against staff theft and fraudulent activities.

Stay safe online

Phishing is a type of online scam where criminals try to trick you into sharing personal information, like passwords, credit card numbers, or account details, by pretending to be someone you trust.

Phishing emails often have spelling errors, urgent calls to action like ‘Act now!’, suspicious links, or requests for personal information. If something seems off, it probably is.

Do not click on any links or download any attachments. Instead, report the email to your service provider or company’s security team and delete it from your inbox.

Always check the sender’s identity before responding or clicking on any links. Use strong, unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication where possible.

You can follow these steps:

o   Close the page immediately if it looks suspicious or unfamiliar, and don’t click on anything else on the page or provide any personal info

o   Clear your browser history and cache to remove any possible tracking cookies or malicious files that might have been downloaded

o   Run a security scan through your antivirus software to check for malware or harmful files.

o   Change your passwords immediately if you provided any personal info by mistake

o   Keep an eye on your banking and other sensitive accounts for any unusual activity, and report this immediately if you see something suspicious

Unusual login locations, unexpected password changes, unauthorized transactions, or emails about new devices connected to your account are all signs that your account might be compromised.

A strong password should be at least 12 characters long and includes a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and special symbols. Avoid using easily guessable information like birthdays or common words.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security by asking for a second step to confirm your identity, such as a code or OTP sent to your phone. It helps protect your account even if your password is stolen. Never share any codes or OTPs with anyone.

Hackers use methods like fake websites, urgent-sounding emails, or even phone calls pretending to be from reputable companies to convince people to share their sensitive information.

Yup, you do. You’ll need either Miway car, motorcycle, home contents or building insurance to qualify for trailer insurance.

Include all pics of licence discs and driver’s licences, along with pics of the damage to your trailer and to the other vehicle/s involved in the accident.

There are a whole bunch of factors that impact your premium - how old you are, how long you've been driving, what type of trailer you have, etc.

We’d hate to see you go, but yes, you can cancel your Miway cover at any time. Just give us a call on 0860646464 to get it sorted. And tell us why you’re leaving here.
