Houseplants That Can Survive the Apocalypse

Spend a few minutes on any social media platform, and you'll notice a refreshing trend: many millenials have fallen in love with the art of growing and caring for plants. Whether it is a vegetable garden, a collection of pot plants or a backyard full of flowers, a deep appreciation for flora has taken root among young adults. 

This newfound interest in gardening makes sense. Greenery adds a tranquil atmosphere to a living space. • Aloe Vera - If you're into natural beauty products, you've heard about this succulent species. Aloe Vera, like other succulents, grow best in dry conditions. Instead of planting a seed, you can grow Aloe Vera by planting cuttings from another Aloe plant, as this will yield results quicker than seeds. In terms of care, start with a cactus potting soil mix and make sure that the pot has plenty of drainage holes. Water every three weeks, and even less in winter. Not even an apocalypse can wither out an Aloe Vera! While most people grow them indoors, your garden is also a prime piece of real estate for them to grow.

• Spider Plant - Don't let the name scare you. Spider Plants are actually quite the visual spectacle. Also known as Chlorophytum comosum, it is one of the most adaptable and simplest houseplants to grow. Well-drained soil, occasional pruning and bright, indirect light are all these plants need to flourish. Water them often but make sure the soil doesn't become soggy, as that can cause the root to rot. If you are growing a Spider Plant from seed, plant them immediately as they don't survive long in storage.

• Snake Plant - Here's another houseplant whose name betrays its beauty. Also known as "Mother-in-Law's Tongue" this is the perfect plant for a beginner to grow. Snake Plant seed is cheap and easy to come by, but seeds take a long time to germinate, which is why they're usually grown by cuttings or division in water.
  
  Snake Plants are so low-maintenance that they only need to be watered once a week. If you live in a dark city apartment, you're in luck. This plant does not need much sunlight to survive. One common issue to watch out for is root rot, which takes place when the roots get too soggy.

Whether or not an apocalypse is coming soon is up for debate. Two things are certain, though. A house with a flower here and a plant there feels more like home.
