Entries are open for 44th MiWay Wally Hayward Marathon

Last Gauteng 2020 Comrades qualifier, with fun for the whole family.

Entries are open for one of Gauteng’s most popular marathons and road races, the MiWay Wally Hayward Marathon. This event is the last opportunity for athletes to qualify for the 2020 Comrades Marathon.

The 2020 MiWay Wally Hayward Marathon, sponsored by MiWay Insurance for the 5th consecutive year, gets underway at the Centurion Rugby Club on 1 May 2020, offering a total of up to R110 000 in prize money. The event has become one of the largest road races in the country, with entries capped at 13 000 for all distances.

The marathon is hosted by Alpha Centurion Runners and Walkers and honours the legendary South African endurance athlete Wallace (Wally) Henry Hayward. Thanks to its popularity and sterling organisation, the MiWay Wally Hayward Marathon has also been selected to host the Athletics Gauteng North (AGN) Marathon Championships this year – the first time in many years that AGN will have an official marathon championship.

The event includes a 42.2km Comrades Marathon qualifier, a 21.1km half marathon, a 10km race, a 5km fun run and a 1km kiddies dash. It caters for Athletics South Africa (ASA) registered and non-registered runners through to blind and wheelchair participants. Participants over the age of 70, the blind and wheelchair participants all qualify for a free entry.

This will be an event that the whole family can enjoy. There will be a kiddies entertainment area, where children will enjoy healthy refreshments and be entertained under supervision while parents participate in one of the events.

Race Director, Francois Jordaan, says, “We strive to host a high quality, enjoyable, yet affordable, event that serves the running community from toddlers to more experienced runners. Partnering with MiWay ensures that we achieve all which we strive to. They not only contribute financially, but also contribute greatly to the vibe and experience leading up to and on the day.”

Head of Marketing and Brand at MiWay, Nthabiseng Moloi, says MiWay’s ongoing sponsorship is in line with its commitment to connect with clients and non-clients and make a difference in communities they operate in.

“The MiWay Wally Hayward Marathon is an event that enables South Africans from all walks of life to engage with our brand, achieve their goals and have loads of fun.  This iconic race is as vibrant, exciting and diverse as the MiWay brand and this is why we are delighted to align ourselves with it. We encourage participants to take this opportunity to make the 2020 MiWay Wally Hayward Marathon a personal best for themselves.”
