Hack into your future!

You landed here – which means you’re either an aspiring Actuary or Data Scientist, who has a thing for turning complex situations into extraordinary solutions.

After a 2-year pandemic break, we are back with the Miway invitation-only Actuarial Hackathon. An opportunity to gather like-minded critical thinkers where graduate students’ modelling skills, resourcefulness and perseverance will be put to the test.

What is it?

The Miway invitation-only Actuarial Hackathon is a 1-week modelling marathon where participants will be given a past dataset to build a model and predict a future outcome. As a participant, you will also get to experience Miway’s hybrid working model and get guidance from our experienced actuaries through daily check-ins. The winning candidate will be the participant with the best pricing strategy for insurance clients, in competition with your fellow participants.

The prizes are as follows:

  • 1st place - R20,000.00 in cash
  • 2nd place - R6,000.00 in cash
  • 3rd place - R4,000.00 in cash

The 1-week modelling marathon will be hosted at our head offices in Kosmosdal, 03 July to 07 July 2023

Who can enter and how?

Honours, final year students and graduates in Actuarial Science, Data Science and other relevant fields can enter the qualifying round. In order to officially participate in the Miway invitation-only Actuarial Hackathon, entrants will be invited by Miway and given further details. Note that entrants must be available to start working in 2024.

How will it work?

The Miway Actuarial Hackathon hosted work-week will start on Monday, 03 July 2023 with a welcoming meeting via MS Teams to all successful applicants. Participants will be give access to work on the solution to the problem from 08h00 to 17h00 every day, with daily check-in meetings each day with a one of our Actuaries to check on progress and answer any questions.

Monday to Thursday is primarily a virtual work-week, however we will have limited computers available at our office in Kosmosdal for participants who wish to join us and work from our office. Should you choose to work remotely as a participant, you will be required to have access to a computer with a stable internet connection.

Friday is encouraged as an in-office work day for all participants, where further engagement with the team will take place and the competition winner announced during a special celebratory prize giving session.

The work week will end on Friday, 07 July 2023 with a prize giving ceremony at 17h00 to announce the 2023 Miway Actuarial Hackathon winner, and thereafter we celebrate over an informal dinner.
