On SA’s roads, you’re likely to see custom sound systems worth more than the car itself, oversized chrome mags polished to perfection, rally lights bright enough to light up a rugby stadium, aftermarket exhausts that announce their arrival from three suburbs away, and personalised wraps, decals and number plates.
Then there are the bull bars, off-road accessories and roof racks that signal adventures that may never happen for hopeful urbanites who want to look the part.
And then there are the more, er, ‘unusual’ add-ons. You know the ones. Novelty dashboard ornaments with nodding heads. Steering wheel covers that look more animal than mechanical. And yes, those infamous blue accessories dangling from the back of certain bakkies at every Blue Bulls fixture – they shall remain nameless for the sake of public decency.
Whether we love them or laugh at them, they all speak to the same thing: pride. Because for so many South Africans, a car is not just a way to get around. It’s a reflection of hard work, identity and achievement.
